Fitbit Versa Lite Edition – review.

Fitbit is a manufacturer that is known for producing devices designed to monitor physical activity. A popular product is the Fitbit Versa smartwatch. Recently, a version with the note “Lite Edition” in the name went on sale, which is aimed at less demanding users.

The contents of the box, the build quality, the design

The device comes to us in a cardboard box, with an illustration of the model inside, and a description of the most important functions in several languages. Inside, in separate compartments, we find the device, an additional, longer strap and a charger. Everything is packed carefully and well protected against possible damage during transport.

On the front of the watch there is a 1.34-inch square LCD display. On its right side there is a sensor used to measure the brightness of the environment. However, it is only visible in strong light, under normal conditions it remains unnoticeable. It does its job well – the smartwatch reacts quickly to changes in lighting. Thanks to this, it can be comfortably used outdoors, even on a sunny day, as well as in dark rooms. Under the display there is a place for the manufacturer’s logo. The space on the front of the watch could have been better utilized. On the part of the watch case that adheres to the hand, the manufacturer has placed connectors for charging and diodes for optical heart rate measurement.

Rubber straps are connected to the case. They are pleasant to the touch and do not irritate the skin. The clasp is the same as in most sports watches, so you don’t have to worry about the device falling off your wrist during exercise. The straps can also be freely exchanged (for example, for a longer one, which is included in the set, or in a different color, which we can buy on our own). However, replacing the belt itself is quite troublesome and can spoil a lot of blood.

Wearing Fibit Versa Lite Edition on the wrist is comfortable, despite its large size. The overall comfort of using the device is also improved by its low weight – we practically do not feel the presence of the smartwatch on our hands. The device connects to the phone via bluetooth 4.0. However, GPS, Wi-Fi and NFC were missing on board. The manufacturer declares that the smartwatch will easily withstand immersion in water up to 50 meters.

Fitbit Versa Lite Edition, especially in the blue color version that I had the opportunity to test, is not a very elegant device. Wearing the device with a more formal outfit than a sports tracksuit is unlikely.

Fitbit has equipped the device with a proprietary operating system. We can wake up the device by pressing the button on the left edge or by lifting your hand. The second solution, however, was occasionally wrong. From the main screen we can read the day of the week, date, time and the number of steps taken on a given day, calories burned in this way and the current pulse. Swiping from the top, as in smartphones, expands notifications. Fitbit gives you the ability to send a quick reply to a received message (“yes”, “no”, “ok”, etc.) from the watch.

Swiping from the bottom gives access to detailed information about our physical activity. The first data is the number of steps taken on a given day. After moving to the right, we can read the distance traveled, calories burned, and check how many steps we have taken in the previous seven days. Below is information about steps in the last hour. According to the creators of the device, we should take 250 steps in the next 9 hours. 10 minutes before the end of this time, the device informs us how many steps must be taken to exceed this limit.

Below you will find information about our pulse, sleep duration, its individual phases, and how much we slept in previous days of the week. We can also find information about recent exercises there.

When the display shows the home screen and we swipe from right to left, we will see the applications installed on the device. The fitness app allows you to choose one of the types of training: running, cycling, walking, treadmill, weightlifting, interval training or working out at the gym. Thanks to this, during exercise, the most important parameters are displayed on the screen, and after their completion, we can read a detailed report on the duration, calories burned and average pulse.

There are also applications installed on the device that allow you to set an alarm, stabilize your breathing, check the weather, use a stopwatch or timer, and read additional tips.

The Strava application is also installed on board the device, which can show the route traveled. Unfortunately, the device itself does not have a GPS module, so to use this function, you must have your phone with you while running or cycling.

In the settings, we can adjust the screen backlight time, its brightness, increase the vibration strength, and change the settings for bluetooth connection and notifications.

mobile application

In order to take advantage of the possibilities offered by the device, you need to install an application for its operation on your phone. It can be easily downloaded and installed from the Google Play Store. Then log in to your account or create one. For some, it may be a big difficulty that the application has not been translated into Polish.

In the application, we have access to the data downloaded by the device – the number of steps, distance traveled, pulse, and sleep time. Sleep data is presented in a clear graph, where sleep is divided into four phases. The sleep measurement appears to be accurate, but this data is only informative. In the form of a graph, data on the pulse, which is measured all the time, is also presented. In the application there was also the possibility of throwing a virtual challenge to other users, and joining the community related to the devices of this manufacturer.

In the application, you can change the appearance of the device’s home screen according to your preferences. There are plenty of interesting looking templates available. A few of them caught my attention. Most had interesting backgrounds, others had a minimalist, modern design, one had planets orbiting the sun instead of pointers, and another had the date and time embedded in Freemasonry symbols. Something good for everyone. However, it is worth remembering that the use of many of them requires an additional fee. After choosing the one that suits us the most, the phone connects to the smartwatch and installs the dial design we choose on it, which takes several seconds.

From the application level, we can also install additional applications on the smartwatch. Most of them are related to physical activity, but there are also other items to choose from, such as a notebook, flashlight, calculator, The New York Times, Uber or Spotify. As entertainment, you can also install simple games such as 2048, Snake, Flappy Bird or tic-tac-toe on the smartwatch. However, the fluidity of the game is not at a very high level, and some games do not work at all. The offer of the application store also includes more non-standard proposals, such as an application that calculates the alcohol content in the blood, based on the drinks consumed, or one that reminds you to pray with your face turned towards Mecca five times a day. As with the home screen themes, some apps also have to be paid for.

According to the manufacturer’s declaration, Fitbit Versa Lite Edition has a lithium-polymer battery that allows you to use the device for at least four days without having to reach for the charger. In fact, during testing, I had to connect the device to the charger every 4 or 5 days. Replenishment of energy from 0 to 100% using a dedicated charger takes about 2 hours.

Fitbit Versa Lite Edition – review

Fitbit Versa Lite Edition for active people can become a powerful tool for monitoring physical activity. For others, this data may be just a curiosity, but installed applications will transform the device into an interesting gadget. However, is it worth spending PLN 700 on this device? Everyone has to answer this question for themselves.
