De Wacht makes this much too hot Sunday a bit hotter with a load of hot game news. How about a console-breaking bug on PS4, the Pokémon Go train rumbling on, or a new shooter from Painkiller and GoW devs? That and more. Weekend watch. Good afternoon!
PS4 players are reporting ‘console breaking’ messages
Aah, Sunday. Relaxing on the couch with a controller in your hand, PlayStation 4 on and – hey, a new message! Oh, it says something illegible. So ignore it. But wait, why can’t I hear any sound from my game console? Why is the controller no longer responding properly? What kind of madness is this ?!
If the above heavily dramatized story sounds familiar to you, then you are probably one of the people who has fallen prey to a bizarre bug. On the PlayStation 4 subreddit, more and more messages are popping up from people who could no longer use their PS4 after opening a message from another user. Why these messages are rendering the PlayStation unusable is a mystery, but it resembles the 2015 iPhone business when a specific letter / number combination crashed the phone. Some PS4 users report seeing only a question mark in a square in the message in question, indicating that the console cannot even interpret / display the message.
De Wacht could not keep this news from you, even though he has not yet heard a Dutchman about the bug. To be on the safe side, you can set your privacy settings for messages on the PS4 to ‘Friends Only’ or ‘No One’, then you can at least know for sure that strangers cannot send you this console-breaking message. If it happened to you; some claim that a factory reset will return the PS4 to normal operation, while others say it only helps to log in via the PlayStation mobile app and manually delete the message. Sony hasn’t commented yet, we’ll be watching!
Pokémon Go brings in $ 85 million in September alone
If you are one of those normies who threw the ball back into the ring after three months of Pokémon Go, and therefore think the game is barely being played, then you are quite wrong. In the month of September alone, Pokémon Go already raised $ 84.8 million, according to data from Sensor Tower. In addition, September was an excellent month for Pokémon Go downloads; the game was downloaded 8.86 million times. The Guard isn’t exactly surprised by these gigantic numbers, after all, he still plays the game every day – aren’t you reading A Bag Full of Monsters or something? – and sees the streets still filling up with players at Community Days and other events.
Pokémon Go is heading for record sales, because September was a quiet month in terms of content if we compare it to October and possibly November. The fourth generation is on the brink of being added, and as with any new gen, that probably means an increase in the number of players (and sales, if Niantic is lucky). To date, Pokémon Go has grossed around $ 2.01 billion and has been downloaded 522 million times.
10 years of Dead Space! Three cheers!
Unholy: A new shooter from former Painkiller, Bulletstorm, and Gears of War developers
Holy ! A relatively new studio consisting of a few people who worked on Painkiller, Gears of War and Bulletstorm, called Duality Games, is just announcing a new first-person shooter / horror / stealth game. His name is Unholy, and the first teaser trailer is online. There is not much to see of the gameplay – all images are included in the game engine -, but the Guard hopes for a wonderful shooter a la Painkiller. Although the emphasis will be more on the horror side, with a lot of prowling and road racing, since those Painkiller games are not exactly the most popular shooters.
Unholy takes place on a ruined and desolate planet where the last members of the human race try to survive in the originally dubbed ‘Last City’. According to the developer, the game contains many challenges that you can solve with stealth, but also by exploiting the ‘social order’ in the city. It is unclear exactly how that takes shape, but the Guard thinks the first images look very interesting (duh, tentacle baby) and hopes that this ‘unique horror world’ is a lot more fun to play than, for example, in the game Agony. That game happens to have the same publisher, which shouldn’t affect gameplay or anything like that.
In Unholy, the player takes on the skin (?) Of a mother named Saidah, who is chasing her kidnapped child. The city is built in a caste system, and everyone above you in the social ladder will try to make your life miserable. It doesn’t take much, given that the city also seems to be plagued by some kind of plague – not to mention the crazy residents and bizarre beasts. Unholy is scheduled for release sometime in 2019, only for PC at the moment. Bonus: the game’s logo could be from a Black Metal band, and the Guard can appreciate that.
Cities Skylines goes Futurama (or Back to the Future II?) Through funny mod
Do you still remember that Futurama intro? Hell, of course, it’s one of the best cartoons ever made, and for anyone who just can’t get enough of all those ships and roads in the sky, there’s a Cities Skylines mod. Yep, just like in Back to the Future II and The Fifth Element; cities made up of different layers of roads, with cars flying around. It is a simple, elegant mod, but one that offers a lot of possibilities when building a new city. Check and / or download the mod here, of course only on PC.
Jon Favreau teases live-action Star Wars series
A great weapon on the set (?) Of the upcoming live-action Star Wars series, which you can see below. Writer / performing products Jon Favreau teases the series The Mandalorian with a beautiful rifle, with a special fork at the front. The weapon has already appeared in the Star Wars universe, but the Extended Universe, or the lore that is not canon. Whoever watches the Star Wars Holiday Special every year – end of year torture! – the weapon may look familiar. Boba Fett has it stuck below in a screenshot (1978). Oh, and as a bonus some cookie jar from the same series.
Capcom showcases Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate crossover costumes
A lot of well-known Capcom costumes are coming to Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, and they are shown in detail below in a new trailer. Through the free DLC, players of the Nintendo Switch game can get started with costumes of famous characters such as Chun-Li and Blanka (Street Fighter), Dante (Devil May Cry), Arthur (Ghosts & Goblins), Amaterasu (Okami) and Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney).
Great gameplay video of Dragon Quest Builders 2
Square Enix has aired a hefty gameplay video / playthrough of Dragon Quest Builders 2: Destruction God Malroth and the Empty Island. This Dragon Quest-Minecraft mix should be released for PS4 and Nintendo Switch at the end of December, at least in Japan, and they will also have a demo to play there soon. It is unclear whether the demo will also be available in English, but that news will undoubtedly follow in the coming weeks. For now, you can check out half an hour of Dragon Quest Builders 2 gameplay, including a lot of talk that the Guard can’t knit with because he (unfortunately) doesn’t speak Japanese.
For Honor: Marching Fire trailer sets fire to and shows graphical upgrades
Ubisoft’s melee game For Honor has always been an uhh, special mix of totally incompatible eras and factions that come to blows. It was never historically accurate, but that is not necessary as long as the fun is right. Ubisoft took a long time to think about what could make the game even more fun, and seems to be on track with the free Marching Fire update. Because yes, what if knights, samurai and Vikings slaughter each other, while everything is on fire?
The update is accompanied by significant graphical adjustments that should make the fire and the existing maps even more beautiful, a new attack & defend mode called Breach Mode, a new co-op Arcade mode and four new ‘heroes’ from the Chinese. Wu Lin faction.
