From 2022 in the EU, all cars will integrate black boxes, etilometers and smart speed assistants.

The legislators of the European Union not only approved yesterday measures such as the controversial copyright reform or the goodbye to the time change: a provisional agreement has also been approved for introduce various security systems in cars that are manufactured from May 2022.
Among them highlight a “black box” similar in function to that of airplanes, an intelligent speed control system that warns of the maximum limits in each section and up to a precision breathalyzer that will not let you start the car if you exceed the allowed levels.

More proactive cars that will help us avoid accidents
The measures are part of the ‘Europe on the move’ program and are destined to save 7,300 lives and avoid 38,900 serious injuries between 2020 and 2030 in the EU according to estimates. The long-term goal is even more ambitious: by 2050, says the ‘Vision Zero’ program, deaths and serious injuries on the road should have been reduced to zero.
To achieve this, the EU has approved an initial agreement to revise the General Safety Regulation, which speaks of up to 15 different systems to guarantee the safety of drivers. They are as follows:

- For passenger cars, vans, trucks and buses: intelligent speed assistants, driver drowsiness and distraction warning, cameras and sensors in the rear for reversing and a data logger in the event of an accident, known as a black box.
- For cars and vans: advanced emergency braking, lane departure assistance, and improved seat belts thanks to crash tests.
- For trucks and buses– Specific requirements to improve direct vision for bus and truck drivers and eliminate blind spots, and systems located at the front and on the side of the vehicle to detect and warn vulnerable road users, especially when driving. make turns.
The car won’t start if you drink too much
For example, this black box stands out, as it happens in airplanes, it will record the events that happen in the car and that will help determine the causes of an accident to be able to act accordingly and improve road safety in the future.
Also relevant is the intelligent speed assistance system, which will take care of warn drivers when they are exceeding the speed limit. The system will be based on the GPS signal and recognition by traffic sign cameras, and the objective is to ensure that we respect those speed limits.

One of the MEPs explained how the European Commission wanted to go further and force manufacturers to have their cars will automatically brake to respect those limits, “but we have guaranteed a compromise in which the systems only have to alert the driver that he is going over the speed limit.”
Those security measures will also include the installation of an ethyl meter, a precision breathalyzer, which could crash boot from the car if the driver exceeds the allowed blood alcohol limits.

There are already manufacturers that are beginning to implement some of these measures or are preparing to do so. We have a good example at Volvo, which from 2021 will limit the maximum speed of all its cars to 180 km / h but will also integrate systems that will stop the car on the shoulder if you drive drunk or fall asleep at the wheel.
If the agreement is finally ratified, the measures They will come into force in May 2022 for new vehicles not yet in production, and in May 2024 for cars already being sold.
