The day has come when ChromeOS wants to compete with Windows and other platforms in the gaming space as well. Google has now released the first early version of Steam. Chromebooks are now more than browser PCs with Android games. They support modern cloud gaming, the most popular games for Android mobile devices and now real PC games.

Steam on Chromebooks: Nothing is left to chance

In short: Steam in the alpha version requires at least 8 gigabytes of RAM and also a Core i5 or i7 from the 11th generation. So quite up-to-date and fast hardware, which is probably not included in most Chromebooks sold. But it’s also not a new phenomenon that gaming needs a little more power.

Google says more Chromebooks are likely to come as new devices with the right performance become available. With the devices available to date, the selection of devices that support the necessary standards remains small.

Steam for ChromeOS can do PC games: Proton translates Windows games for Linux

PC games can thus be played on Chromebooks, the first international colleagues report after their test runs. The list of supported games is already very long for the first day and includes titles like Fallout 4, Portal, Civilization, Left 4 Dead 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and many more.
