Google would be working on a major competitor for Xbox and PlayStation.
Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are well established at the top of the games industry, offering the main platforms on which every game developer and studio wants to place their games. Except that, according to five anonymous and independent sources who talked to Kotaku, it seems that Google has an interest in becoming the fourth great player of that championship.
Rumors that the search giant has been working on a gaming platform to compete with the big ones have been circulating on the web for months, but, according to the publication, the thing has intensified a lot, and Google itself would have given some indications that could enter that sector at any time.
The main idea would be to build an online catalog of games that could be played via streaming
The sources say the company would be talking to the biggest game studios to bring their titles to the new platform that the company would be developing. The main idea would be to build an online catalog of games that could be played via streaming on any type of device connected to the web. However, Google would also have plans to launch its own console, to materialize this new service. The project’s code name would be Yeti.
Apart from this information, there are concrete indications that Google really wants to fight for the top of the game industry. The company has hired executives from its main future competitors, Microsoft and Sony, in addition to bringing in people from major studios like EA. In January of this year, Phil Harrison, who worked for both Xbox and PlayStation, joined Google for a project that is still mysterious.
According to Kotaku sources, Google would even be willing to buy big studios to start its initiative in the world of games, but we still don’t know exactly what the company plans to do with it.
Lag in game streaming
But if Google really wants to bring big titles to its gaming platform, the fact that it is supposed to be focused on streaming can be a problem. It is a fact that internet connectivity around the world is far from ideal, especially in countries of continental dimensions such as Brazil, China or even the USA.
Google, however, may end up being the only company interested in the gaming industry with the potential to actually solve the internet bandwidth problem. The company has invested in the expansion of Fiber, its own fixed internet operator that offers connections 100x faster than the average in the USA. Other than that, the company has several initiatives to improve the infrastructure as a whole of the world wide web.
If anyone has the ability to eliminate lag in streaming games, it’s probably Google
Right now, Google is working with Algar Telecom and other companies to install a new submarine cable connected Brazil to the USA in order to significantly improve the speed at which Brazilians access its services. There is also Project Loon – which is not exactly focused on games – and many other initiatives around the world. So if anyone has the ability to eliminate lag in streaming games, it’s probably Google.
On the other hand, the company has a bad record of investing in new products. The company often launches new products on the market and, suddenly, stops investing in them and lets them die. Google Glass, Nexus Q and Play Music are just a few. It seems that, for Google, a new product has to be immediately successful, such as Android or Chromecast. Otherwise, the company loses interest.
But tell us what you think of the whole story. Does Google really have the clout to go head-to-head with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo in the gaming world? Will the company be able to offer a gaming streaming experience good enough to win over the gamer audience. Leave your opinion in the comments section.
