Apps with a dark mode that you must use
After teasing dark mode in the Gmail app for too long, Google has finally delivered. If you are using the latest version of Gmail, dark mode automatically activates when you enable dark theme in Android 10. You can also go to app settings and then general settings > Theme and select Sombre from the list.
Facebook is testing dark mode, so not everyone will have access to it yet. I don’t have the option, but you can check if you do by opening the Facebook app on your phone, tap the three button icon to open the number, then scroll to the bottom of the page where you will find Settings and privacy. Tap on it to bring up a list of additional options, where you should find a dark mode setting. If you don’t see it in settings and privacy, it means your account doesn’t have access to it yet. You will need to keep checking. Looking at the video in the tweet above, it looks like Facebook has the right dark mode.
The official Android messages app has a lot of features, but the app also supports automatic switching with Android 10’s dark theme, as well as dark mode which you can turn on manually if you don’t have Android 10. You don’t have to. explore the settings to activate it. Open the app, tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner, and then turn on dark mode.
Google Calendar and Keep both have a dedicated dark mode with support for Android 10. In Calendar, slide the side menu and go to Settings > General > Theme > Sombre to activate it manually. In Keep, go to Settings > Activate dark mode
Feedly’s dark mode is found by opening the side panel and then selecting Night mode. This is a good idea, especially if you spend a lot of time reading various reports and articles. Slide down the menu, tap Choose theme, then select your preferred theme, or if you want the app to automatically switch to match your device’s theme.
Facebook Messenger first tested a dark mode which you can unlock by sending a crescent moon emoji in a conversation thread. Once the tests were completed, the feature became official and can now simply be enabled in settings.
The first time you launch the PocketCasts podcast app on a device running Android 10, you will be prompted to allow the app to automatically switch between its light and dark theme depending on your system settings. You can manually enable dark mode by going to the Profile tab and then tapping the Settings icon in the top right corner. Then go to Appearance > Theme. Choose between Dark or Extra Dark.
Google Maps doesn’t have a dedicated dark mode throughout the app. Instead, there is a night mode used during night browsing which you can force the app to use at any time. Drag the menu to the left side of the screen then go to Settings> Navigation settings. Scroll down and select Night under the map display color scheme section.
The official Reddit app uses a few different dark mode settings and can be controlled by the system settings of Android 10. You can enable the night theme anytime in the settings under Theme, or you can let the app decide when it is dark based on the time of day or your phone’s system settings.
The YouTube app looks a lot better with the dark mode turned on. Light that up by opening the app, then tap your profile icon> Settings > General > Appearance. You can select Dark, Light, or use the system setting.
Do you spend a lot of time in Slack? Then, yes, you’ll want to use its dark mode. It will automatically change with Android 10’s system settings, or you can find the toggle in app settings by tapping on the You tab in the lower right corner and then Preferences> Dark mode.
Tumblr recently updated its app to include a new color scheme feature, adding three themes, one of which is a dedicated dark mode. To view the new themes, open the Tumblr app, click your profile icon> settings icon > general settings > Color pallet.
Google Photos now has a dark mode which is activated whenever you activate a dark or night theme on your Android phone. You won’t find a toggle in the app’s settings menu, and no specific update seems to have it enabled.
There are many other apps that support dark mode or night theme. If you really want to go all-in in dark mode, your best bet is to look in the Settings section of each app (the appearance or display sub-settings are a great place to look) for the option to change the appearance of the application.
Dark mode for non-Android 10 devices
If your phone is running Android Pie, you can enable its built-in dark mode. The process will vary depending on who made your device and any customization done on Android. But for the most part, the following should work: Settings > Display > Advanced > Device theme > Sombre. Once it’s enabled, check out the quick settings panel or your Google feed, which should now be dark.
When Samsung rolled out its refresh of the One UI for Galaxy phones, which includes Android Pie, a night mode was added (instead of the dark theme approach). Activate Night mode in Settings > Display > Night mode.
Samsung’s night mode takes a more aggressive approach to darkening the interface. For example, almost immediately the Settings app turns from a white background to black. The quick settings panel and individual notifications will also be dark. You’ll also find dark versions of almost all Samsung apps preinstalled when Dark Mode is on.

What is Android dark mode? And how to activate it
Some users find dark themes for Android easier to look at than the default interface. How you activate Android dark mode depends on the version of Android running on your smartphone or tablet.
The instructions in this article apply to Android 10 and Android 9 (Pie). Dark mode is not available in older versions of the operating system.
How to activate Android dark mode on Android 10
By default, the theme’s tint is set to the same automatic mode based on wallpaper detection as older versions of Android, but there are now dedicated options for a permanent color theme. To enable the dark theme on Android 10 devices:
Open the Settings app.
To exploit Screen.
Press the toggle switch next to it Dark theme to activate it.
From there, swipe up from the top of your screen to access your quick settings. You will see the new dark gray background with white text. Some apps, such as Google Chrome, Google Pay, and YouTube, will also automatically adapt to the dark theme.
Android developers now have the option to add dark mode support to Android apps.
How to activate Android Dark Mode on Android 9.0 Pie
Android 9.0 (Pie) added an option to switch between dark and light themes, but the process is a little different from Android 10. To enable dark mode on Android 9:
Launch the Settings app and touch Screen.
To exploit IIoT Gateway to expand the list of options.
Scroll down and press Device theme, then press sombre in the pop-up dialog.
Android 9 Dark Mode Limitations
On Android 9, the settings menu and other interface elements, like the notifications that appear under the quick settings, remain tinted with a light theme consisting of a white background and black text. However, if you know how to change your Android wallpaper, you can pair dark mode with a lighter wallpaper for a more consistent experience.
Users can also supplement the dark interface by configuring individual apps according to their respective dark modes. A few Google apps provide options for a dark theme that’s pretty consistent with the dark quick settings UI.
How to turn on dark mode for Android messages
The Android Messages app will automatically switch to match the dark theme on Android 10 devices. On Android 9, the Messages app can be manually customized with a dark theme:
Launch the Messages app.
Press the three dot icon in the upper right area of the application.
To exploit Activate dark mode.
From there, your Messages app will immediately switch to a dark gray background with white text, with the colored contact icons retaining their original palette.
How to enable dark mode for YouTube
YouTube also has a corresponding dark look. To activate it:
Press your profile icon in the top right corner of the app.
To exploit Settings.
To exploit “General”.
Press the toggle switch next to it Dark theme. You should now see the video thumbnails, comments, and other text boxes on a dark gray background.
