[GUIDE] : Everything you need to know about android 10 Part four
5. More accessible security updates
Thanks to Google Play system updates, important security and privacy fixes can now be sent to your phone from Google Play, just like updates to your apps. So you get these fixes as soon as they are available, without having to wait for a full operating system update.
6. Better control over smartphone usage
Now Family Link is part of every device running Android 9 or 10, directly in the settings under Digital Wellbeing. Parents can use these tools to set digital ground rules like daily screen time limits, device shutdown time, time limits on specific apps, and more. They can also review which apps kids are installing on their devices, as well as how they’re being used.
There are other new features in Android 10: business functionality, application timers, new emojis etc. After abandoning the names of desserts for its versions, Google therefore decides to carry out an update based on on maturity and usefulness.
We got started with Android 10, and here’s what changes
The latest generation of the Google operating system has just arrived. Discover our handling of Android 10, from a Pixel 3a XL.
You probably already knew: Android abandons the names of dessert to focus on a name that is much simpler and more sober. For the tenth generation of the operating system, the update dubbed “Android 10” (instead of Android “Q”), marks a new beginning for the license. It must be said that it will be she who will most certainly integrate the new foldable smartphones on the market, starting with the new Samsung Galaxy Fold which will be marketed on September 18.
More mature therefore, Android 10 is also closer to iOS, Apple’s operating system. You will be able to find out in our grip, a new feature allows the Android interface to be able to control the smartphone like the latest Apple iPhone X.
Overall, there are few new features, but there are some new features worth showing off. We are thinking in particular of the emphasis placed on confidentiality and digital comfort.
Android 10 is available since September 3 on some smartphones
Immediately published, immediately available. We were able to discover Android 10 thanks to the range of smartphones from Google, being the first to have this new version of the OS. To do this, we took in hand the Pixel 3a in its XL version. In addition, the entire Pixel range is suitable for this new version. If you have a Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, or a Pixel 3a XL, then the update will be available.
Otherwise, other smartphone brands also plan to offer the update to Android 10, by the end of the year or early 2020. At the last IFA in Berlin, Huawei (which will launch HarmonyOS) , has even communicated a new version of its P30 Pro which can be launched with Android 10 shortly. In the meantime, some brands offer their customers to download beta 3 of the new version of the OS.
Getting started with Android 10: what’s new in the OS?
Android 10 generalizes the dark theme
Let’s start our test with one of the most popular features that Android 10 adopts, like iOS 13 at Apple: dark mode. Android has decided to generalize the theme when many Google applications and other social networks had already taken the plunge.
On our Pixel 3a XL we tested with, the mode toggles most system apps and display pages like the notifications bar and quick shortcuts for settings. Applications such as the calendar, messages, Google News or the settings button will now be in black, as will the ignition screen.
According to Google, the generalized dark mode on Android 10 will also allow sites to be displayed with this black skin. To do this, Android enables dark-themed CSS pages that sites submit on their server. Not all of them are obviously available, but this extension of the mode is welcome.
A small caveat also: by using the theme for several hours, we noticed that some less frequented applications were still causing problems. For example, the content of notifications can become invisible with dark mode, if the application has not submitted a notification adapted to the theme. A point which should more and more be rectified by the programs, over time.
Goodbye buttons, hello to iPhone X-style gestures!
Second important feature with the Android 10 update: the appearance of a new control gesture. We all know it: the aesthetics of our smartphones depend more and more on their ability to offer an increasingly large space devoted to the screen. To support this desire, Android 10 leaves aside its symbolic “Home”, “Back” and “Multitasking” buttons at the bottom of the screens.
From now on, it will be possible to control an Android device using only gestures on the screen, like what Apple offers from the iPhone X. The Home button results in a movement from the bottom to the top, and the The page viewed closes to make room for the main screen. To go back, you will have to swipe from left to right, from the right edge of the screen. Finally, a shortcut to switch to another application is possible, by simply swiping to the right or left, from the bottom edge of the screen.
Small disappointment on the Android Stock overlay of the range of Google Pixel smartphones, it will still not be possible to access a screen sharing mode, allowing two applications to be opened simultaneously. A point that Android 10 has however largely developed, while foldable smartphones will make a strong added value in their use.
Android 10: the emphasis on privacy?
When reconfiguring a Pixel 3a XL to perform this test, we had to download our favorite apps again. By carrying out the manipulation with Android 10 already installed, a new setting was offered to us in the Play Store, when we first opened the downloaded application. The latter – when the program wishes to access our location – offers us to refuse, accept, or accept only when the application is activated.
Thus, it will be possible not to submit our location data when we are not using the app. Useful, when we see the multiple problems encountered by cybersecurity experts, vis-à-vis the use of our personal data by certain programs.
Digital well-being and parental controls: what does Android 10 bring?
In addition to dark mode, Android 10 offers new features to protect our digital security and visual comfort. An interface, present in the phone settings, allows you to take stock with you on your use of the smartphone and the applications used. A point in addition to enhanced parental control. For example, you can now configure the Youtube Kids application at a certain time of the day, define a maximum daily duration in the use of the application.
For young and old, this configuration of applications also offers a “focus” mode to disable notifications. The setting offers a general deactivation, or also allows you to define yourself which applications you no longer want to receive notifications.
300 new emojis
We will end our test of the various features of Android 10 with the appearance of a host of new emojis, available from the Google keyboard. On the program, the OS adds new variations of skin colors, as well as a proposal for a more varied couple of individuals (“gender inclusive”). New animals, items and flags are also available. To discover their appearance, here is a large sample listed by Emojipedia.
While waiting for “Live Caption”, the most important novelty of Android 10
Among all the new features presented, the most important has not yet been launched by Android. It is about “Live Caption”, a feature which Android announces for a long time, and of which it had communicated a video of presentation about it last May.
This is indeed the most significant advance of the tenth generation of Android. Behind its name, hides in reality a mode allowing to translate the video stream in the form of text. A tool dedicated to deaf people, for whom “the screen of a smartphone is a silent screen”. Thanks to “Live Caption”, the subtitles will be generalized on all video content, by simply pressing a parameter available from the volume shortcut.
Faced with the subtitles available automatically on Youtube, the mode should be much more advanced and of quality. This is what we hope for this month, in view of the often questionable translations on the video platform.
It should have been called Android Q, and the “Android Version” interface in the settings menu seems to remind us of this. Android 10 arrives in September with a big responsibility: it is this version that will accompany a foldable smartphone for the first time, and it is with it that the unstable situation of cybersecurity and digital health will have to be controlled.
Android 10 is thus more mature with its name. Its novelties, not making major changes, will have focused on these different aspects that telephony will have to face.
For this first grip on our Pixel 3a XL, no apparent defect has not been to report, except the dark mode not yet allowing to display the notifications of certain applications. We are now waiting for the Live Caption functionality, to judge the full control, of the operating system from Google.
