How to locate my lost Airpods?

Since IOS 10.3, Apple has offered a system that allows you to locate your AirPods if you ever lose them. For this, you will first need to have your Airpods configured. Logically, you performed this manipulation when you connected the AirPods to your phone for the first time. You must have activated the option Find my iPhone and the option Send the last position.

If they are configured correctly, you should be able to locate them, but certain conditions must be respected:

  • The charging box must be open.
  • Your AirPods should be outside of the charging case.
  • Your AirPods should be near Bluetooth. If not, you will only be able to locate the last position they connected to a device.

You then have several solutions to find your AirPods. You can locate them on a map or ring them. We will detail these procedures for you.

How to find your lost AirPods

Apple has a “Find My AirPods” tool that allows you to view their location on a map. You can even make your AirPods beep surprisingly loud if they’re on.

This feature is part of Apple’s “Find My iPhone” tool, which also helps you find lost iPads and Macs. You can access it in two ways: by using the Find My iPhone app on an iPhone or iPad, or by signing into the website on a PC or Mac.

Launch the app or visit the website, then sign in with your Apple ID. If your AirPods have been paired with an iPhone or iPad that has your Apple ID, they will appear in the list under “My devices”.

If your AirPods are on, they will show up here as “Online”. AirPods only appear online if they’re within range of your iPhone or iPad, out of the case, and on battery power. If the AirPods are out of range of your device, are in the AirPods case, or are no longer using battery power, they will show up as “Offline” instead.

If your AirPods are offline for some reason, you can touch them and you might be able to see their last known location. This gives you an idea of where you last used your AirPods, which is a good place to start looking for them. In some cases, you won’t be able to see their last known location at all, and you will only see an image of AirPods on a gray map of the world.

Remember that the last known location is not a bulletproof feature. For example, let’s say you last used your AirPods in your office. Before you got home, you put the AirPods in their charging case and took them with you. If you drop your AirPods out on the street on the way home, their “last known location” will still be your desktop because that’s the last place they were online and connected to your phone.

If your AirPods appear to be online, you can tap them in the list and view their location on a map. This will of course be near your iPhone or iPad. Press the “Play Sound” button to play a loud beep on each AirPod. It helps you find the AirPods if you have lost them somewhere nearby. The beep sounds louder than you would expect from the tiny AirPods and will increase in volume as you play.

Attention: Make sure you don’t have the AirPods in your ears when you press this button. For example, if you are looking for a single lost AirPod and you still have the other in your ear, remove it before continuing. Loud sound could damage your hearing.

You can press the “Mute Left” and “Mute Right” buttons here to mute one AirPod once you find it, making the second easier to identify. Tap “Stop playing” to stop the sound when you find your AirPods.

It’s harder to find lost AirPods than a lost iPhone. While iPhones are always online (unless they’re turned off), AirPods depend on your iPhone or iPad and don’t communicate when they’re in their case. If you lose your AirPods, be sure to remove the Find My iPhone app and try to play a sound on them as soon as possible to make sure you can find them before they lose battery power.
