On iOS, Music app users will need to go to “General”, then “Music” before touching the section «Equalizer» so you can choose between the 23 available presets. Negative point, Cupertino did not see fit (and it is a pity) to provide a band equalizer on its mobile devices. Maybe with the next iteration of iOS, you never know. Spotify, or Deezer, users can easily take advantage of the equalizers available within these apps.

On the macOS side, the principle is the same, you will have to use the Music App, or hope that the program of your choice has an integrated equalizer. In Music, click on “Window” in the menu bar, before selecting «Equalizer» (or with the keyboard shortcut Option + Command + E). It will then be possible to opt for one of the 22 presets, or to choose to influence the rendering yourself via the tape equalizer.

iOS 14 reduces the maximum volume more finely

iOS 14 adds a new option that improves maximum volume reduction on headphones or with headphones. Until then, Apple’s mobile system had offered a “hard” limit in Settings> Music> Maximum volume. Once set, it was not possible to increase the volume beyond this limit when using earphones or headphones.

With iOS 14, the option was replaced with a new setting, this time in Sounds and vibrations> Decrease loud sounds. The option is disabled by default in the first beta of the system, but you can enable it and then choose a maximum sound volume, expressed in decibels. Apple offers six options, from 75 dB to 100 dB, each time with an equivalent in everyday life: the sound of a vacuum cleaner, a restaurant, a street, a motorcycle, a horn and finally an ambulance siren.

Once this option is enabled, you will still be able to use the full amplitude of the volume control, there is no hard blocking at one level like before. On the other hand, beyond the defined level, iOS 14 will actively restrict sounds, taking into account the source in real time. The effect looks more like a filter placed on a speaker, than a simple clamping.

This new function is available for headphones and headsets equipped with the Apple Bluetooth chip, including AirPods, but also for other headsets and earphones. I was able to test it with Beyerdynamic headphones plugged in via Belkin’s RockStar adapter and it did its job perfectly. It is not limited to iPhones either, iPads can also benefit from it and even watches running watchOS 7 have this option in their Settings app.

The Health app won with iOS 13 a section dedicated to hearing health and average listening level with headphones and headphones. You can use this data to configure the new function of iOS 14, according to your habits.

Apple’s AirPods Pro earphones have been a big hit so far. Most would say they are worthy of competing with other wireless headphones at similar price points. However, some AirPods Pro users have reported disappointing bass, poor noise cancellation, or poor overall sound quality when using them.

That’s why we’ve rounded up ways to improve the sound of your AirPods Pro so you can get the most out of your new headphones. Let’s see the best ways to improve the sound quality of your headphones. As a bonus, some of these tips also work for regular AirPods, if not for most other headphones.

1. Update your AirPods

The first way to improve the sound of your AirPods Pro is to make sure that they are updated. Apple occasionally releases updates for AirPods to improve their sound quality. You may never have noticed, because AirPods are set to update automatically.

However, you can also configure your AirPods to manually check for updates. Here’s how to update your AirPods Pro:

  • Make sure your AirPods Pro are in their charging case.
  • Plug in or charge the wireless box.
  • Make sure your iPhone is connected to the internet.
  • Keep your AirPods Pro handy or connected to your iPhone.
  • Your AirPods Pro should now update automatically. According to the update, their sound should improve.

    2. Disable ANC

Surprisingly, one of the best ways to improve the sound quality of your AirPods Pro is to turn off active noise cancellation (ANC). This does not mean that you have to turn on Transparency mode: you want to turn it off completely.

Now that you know, here’s how to turn off ANC on your AirPods Pro:

  • Open Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner of iPhone X and later, or an iPad with iOS 12 or later.
  • On an iPhone 8 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom of the screen instead.
  • Long press the volume bar showing the AirPods Pro inside.
  • To selectFrom, which is the middle mode.
  • Alternatively, you can long press the force sensor of your AirPods (located on their rod) to switch between modes.

Now, without ANC distorting your music, you can enjoy much more punchy, balanced and unprocessed sound.

    3. Perform the eartip fit test

If your AirPods Pro still seems uncertain, it could be because the included ear tips are not sealing your ears sufficiently. Luckily, there’s a quick way to find out which size (small, medium, or large) is right for you.

Apple offers an ear tip fit test on your devices. This lets you know what size eartip is preventing sound from leaking into or out of your ears.

To find the mouthpiece fit test:

  • Connect your AirPods Pro to your phone.
  • OpenSettings and selectBluetooth.
  • To selectAirPods Pro.
  • Scroll toEar fit test and walk up the steps.
  • During the test you will hear music playing. As we mentioned, this is all part of a test to see what produces the best sound. Hope you now have a good idea of which ear size is best for you.

    4. Change the equalizer

Depending on the music streaming service you are using, you can adjust the EQ settings to dramatically improve the sound quality and create a much more punchy sound. Here’s how to do it with two of the most popular music streaming apps: Spotify and Apple Music.

To change the equalizer in Spotify:

  • OpenSpotify.
  • On theHome tab, pressSettings icon.
  • To selectProofreading.
  • Scroll to Equalizer.
  • Play around with the presets and see what works best for you. If you want, you can manually adjust the equalizer instead.
  • For more bass, selectBass Boosteror increase the 60Hz meter to your preference.
  • To change the equalizer in Apple Music:

  • Go toSettings application on your phone.
  • Scroll toThe music.
  • To selectEQ from the list.
  • Choose the desired equalizer setting. For example, chooseBass Booster if you still have bass issues.
  • With that, the sound and bass quality should now be a lot fuller than what you’ve heard before, all thanks to that tiny EQ setting.

    5. Increase the sound quality

Did you know that you might not get the best possible music quality from your music streaming app? Fortunately, it’s easy to change these settings, depending on the service you’re using.

For now, we will only see how to do this in Spotify Premium, as Apple Music does not yet have a quality selection feature. Keep in mind that there are streaming services like Tidal and Amazon Music HD that provide super hi-fi music to audiophiles.

Here’s how to improve audio quality in Spotify Premium:

  • OpenSpotify and press theSettingsicon.
  • To chooseMusical quality.
  • To selectHaute orVery high.
  • 6. Charge your AirPods

While it might seem obvious, we often forget that our headphones are low on battery power after listening to them for so long. When an audio device is low on battery, the sound tends to deteriorate. Make sure your AirPods are charged if the sound quality is risky.

Speaking of which, here’s a quick tip for wireless charging; you can just tap your finger on the AirPods case to check its battery status. If it lights up red, it is still charging. If it turns green, it is fully charged.

To more easily track your AirPods Pro battery level in the future, you can add them to your view today * i:

  • Swipe left to right on the home screen to accessWidgets page.
  • Scroll toEdit.
  • Tap the green plus sign next toBatteries.
  • To selectFinished.
  • Whenever your AirPods Pro are on, just swipe to check their battery level.
  • Now you can more easily track the battery of your AirPods to avoid low power situations and preserve their sound.

    7. Buy memory foam ear tips

The silicone ear tips provided by Apple for the AirPods Pro work great. But if you are looking for a better fit or better bass response, memory foam ear tips may be a good choice for you.

Memory foam, the material commonly used in mattresses, has a soft, plush construction that adapts to your ear and remembers its shape for maximum comfort. And while there are tons of memory foam ear tips for AirPods Pro that you can buy, we recommend LICHIFIT memory foam ear tips.

Hopefully replacing with foam ear tips will fix the dull sound of your AirPods Pro.

Optimize the sound of your AirPods Pro

The methods we have listed above should provide a nice boost in improving the sound of your AirPods Pro. Getting the most out of your headphones is always important, especially if you’ve paid a fair amount of money for them.
