AirPods are so easy and natural to use that you almost forget they have a battery. And who says battery, says recharge. Before you end up with completely discharged headphones, it would be nice to know the level of their charge, right? Note that there is at least one way per device to see the battery percentage of your AirPods.
To know the different ways to see the state of charge, the battery percentage of your AirPods, you will need to have already connected your AirPods to your iOS or macOS device for methods 2, 3 and 4. For this, it is very simple.
- Open the case (with the AirPods inside);
- Your iOS device will detect and connect them;
- They will be connected to all devices with the same iCloud account, you will only have to change the audio output source or go through the Bluetooth of iOS or macOS devices;
- To connect them to a device with a different iCloud shot, you will simply have to press the button on the back of the case for a few seconds to make it discoverable in Bluetooth.
Pairing AirPods is very intuitive and their configurations are relatively easy as long as we know it exists.
Method 1: see the battery level using the AirPods case
This method does not require any external device other than your AirPods, but is not very accurate. When opening the case, between the 2 AirPods, you can see a charge status indicator. If you have the wireless box, the light is on the front, under the notch to open it, you will still have to open the box, or put it on a charging station, so that it lights up. . This indicator light gives you up to 3 information depending on its color:
1.1. Green, the battery is at 100%;
1.2. Orange, the battery is below 100% not being more accurate, that can be 99% like 1%;
1.3. Off, there is no more battery, it is at 0% and needs to be charged.
If your AirPods are stored in the case, the light will indicate their battery. If this is not the case and the box is empty, you will then know the state of charge of the latter always thanks to the same indicator light.
Method 2: See the battery level of your AirPods using iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
2.1. Automatic display
When pairing the device, you should have seen a window automatically appear with the battery percentage of the box and headphones, see separate headphones if they do not have the same charge stage.
To display this window, you will need to have the case close to the iPhone with at least one AirPod inside and then open it.
2.2. The Battery Widget
This window is very practical, but in full use of the 2 AirPods it would mean that you will have to remove your AirPods, put them in the case, close it and then open it again. There, we immediately lose efficiency. This is where the Battery widget kicks in. With this widget you can see the battery of your AirPods, but also of your Apple Watch on your iPhone or your Apple Pencil on iPad.
The widget page is the leftmost page whether or not your screen is locked. If there is no Battery widget:
2.2.1. Go all the way down;
2.2.2. Press on Modifier ;
2.2.3. Find the widget Drums and click on the + in green, if you want to move it where you want;
2.2.4. Validate with OK.
When you listen to music, watch video, you can choose audio and video output. When music or video is on the way, you can find it in the Control Center. Here is how to know the state of charge of your headphones in full use:
2.3.1. In music, on the current song, tap the icon at the very bottom in the middle, the one that looks like a mix between AirDrop and AirPlay;
2.3.2. In Control Center, long or hard press the Now Playing shortcut
2.3.3. There you can see the battery percentage of your AirPods.
Method 3: See the battery level of your AirPods on your Apple Watch
For this method, you must have paired an Apple Watch and AirPods with an iPhone.
You can know the battery status of your AirPods in use whether they are connected to your watch or your phone. It works since AirPods 1 and with the very first Apple Watch.
3.1. Swipe up from the bottom to display the different options;
3.2. Tap the Apple Watch battery percentage;
3.3. In addition to the possibility of reserve mode, you will see the charge status of your AirPods.
Method 4: View the battery level of your AirPods from your Mac
Just like iOS, your Mac can quickly connect to your AirPods. You can select them by choosing the audio output in Son or connect them with the Bluetooth. However, you will only have one way to know the battery level of your AirPods: through the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar. If you connect to your AirPods with at least one earbud in the case, the battery of the case will also be displayed.
If you don’t see the icon Bluetooth in the menu bar, go to > System Preferences > Bluetooth and activate by checking, at the bottom, Show Bluetooth in the menu bar.
To know the charge status of your box, there must be at least one earphone in it and the AirPods must be connected to one of these devices. If you do not see your 2 headphones distinctly, it is because they have the same level of charge.
Your AirPods can connect to your Apple TV just as easily. However, this will not help you to know their state of charge. If you connect your AirPods to devices other than these, you might not be able to see the battery percentage except maybe with apps.

Or if one of the headphones is in the box and the other is out. This widget also announces the charge available for the case / battery of these headphones when opened and that it contains at least 1 AirPods.
Likewise, when you open the small storage box, the iPhone almost immediately displays the remaining charge rates for it as well as the two earbuds.
You can also go to the iOS playback control panel and tap on “Listening on AirPods”.
Not to mention the macOS Bluetooth menu which distinguishes the two batteries in its report.
