Launched in 2011, iCloud is Apple’s cloud platform. It brings together its various cloud-based services. This platform includes both an email service, a contact and calendar synchronization system, the geolocation of lost devices (Find my iPhone), and music storage with iTunes Match.

Like all cloud services, iCloud allows information to be stored on a remote server via the internet rather than storing it locally. These servers are located in Apple Data Centers.

In this way, the user can preserve storage capacity of his device. It is also able to access information from any device connected to the internet.

In fact, iCloud isn’t Apple’s first online storage service. Previously, until 2011, the firm offered the MobileMe service offering synchronization in exchange for an annual subscription.

It was possible to synchronize emails, contacts, calendars, photo galleries, or even bookmarks. iCloud replaced MobileMe, and add new features, better flexibility and free services with a capacity of 5GB.

However, this platform is available in a multitude of varied services. Here are the main ones.

What are the advantages of iCloud?

iCloud offers several advantages. Like all cloud services, the platform first of all makes it possible to save online content.years using local storage capacity and access it from any device connected to the internet.

However, iCloud is one of the best choice for iPhone and iPad users since it is integrated into Apple’s software. All macOS and iOS apps can be connected to iCloud and data can be backed up to the cloud.

So there is no need to install any third party application, and operation is optimized and fluidized to the maximum. If your computers and mobile devices are Apple products, then the iCloud experience is easier and more comfortable than choosing a third-party cloud service.

Apple iCloud: in China, data is now stored by the state

Apple iCloud will now be managed in China by state-owned China Telecom. This will take care of the storage of Apple’s cloud data. In fact, the Chinese government will most certainly be able to freely access this data to the detriment of user privacy.

In February 2018, Apple created controversy by announcing that the accounts of its iCloud storage service of Chinese users and their encryption keys would be transferred to the servers of the Chinese company Ghizhou-Cloud Big Data.

The Cupertino company had no other choice to continue offering its services in China. For good reason, following a review, Chinese law prohibits Cloud services that are not managed by Chinese companies, and requires that Chinese user data is stored in the country.

Despite its reluctance, Apple finally agreed to submit to this law in order to continue to offer its Cloud in China so as not to compromise the experience of its Chinese users. This decision has aroused the concern of human rights defenders and Chinese dissidents.

Amnesty International was particularly concerned that Ghizhou-Cloud Big Data would be forced to provide iCloud user data if the government so demanded. However, Apple tried to reassure the crowds by specifying that it would continue to control the encryption key linked to each account.

In theory, therefore, the government should not be able to access users’ personal data. Unfortunately, in this month of July 2018, state-owned China Telecom just recovered iCloud data à Ghizhou-Cloud Big Data.

In fact, the Chinese government could now potentially access all users’ iCloud data: photos, videos, notes, emails, text messages … even if the state media present this change as a victory for consumers, citizens find it difficult to swallow the pill.

On Weibo, the most used social network in China, many users worry about their privacy and fear the appearance of censorship on iCloud. For Chinese users, the time seems to have come to switch cloud providers. However, remember that in theory, only Apple holds the key to decrypt the data on its Cloud.
