You don’t understand anything about TikTok? Here’s how to use the teen’s favorite app

TikTok is said to have over half a million active users around the world. Here is a survival guide on the app for anyone who doesn’t understand it.

TikTok’s success has been overwhelming. Since its inception in 2016, the short video sharing app has been downloaded a billion times, and has half a billion monthly active users. Still not one of them? We explain how to get started. I promise, it’s easier than it looks.

TikTok is an app that comes from China, where it’s called Douyin. It was launched in 2016 and it allows you to share videos of dance, play-back, challenges, or humorous sketches. Filters and speed-up and slow-down effects make these videos more original.

TikTok’s success has long been limited to Asia. The app was not available in Europe. In August, it merged with Musica.ly, a very popular playback application. It then took off all over the world.

If you want to know more about the history of TikTok, we invite you to read our article on the subject. Once this is done, all you have to do is practice …

The first thing to do is of course to download the application. It is available for free on iOS and Android.

You don’t need to create an account to watch videos. However, it will be necessary to post it yourself, to connect with your friends or to subscribe to hashtags (keywords). So, you might as well do it automatically.

To create an account, it’s very easy. On the home page, click on the snowman silhouette at the bottom right. A small window “You need a TikTok account to continue” will then open (1).

You can either: create an account from an email, or connect with your Facebook, Google or Twitter credentials. Enter your date of birth and a phone number or email. A security code will be sent to you by message. You just have to type it again, then validate. Your account is created!

Once this is done, you will be taken to the home page. Then click again on the silhouette at the bottom right. You get an overview of your profile. To modify it, click on the “edit profile” button (2). You can directly change your nickname and username (3). Both will appear on your profile. Be careful with your choice of username: once it is registered, you must wait 30 days to be able to change it again.

Under the pseudonym and username, you can add a description, which details for example what will be found on your account.

Finally, you can change your profile picture by clicking on the gray circle above the username. With your fingertips, you can zoom in, zoom out or improve the framing. It is also possible to choose a profile video that you will have to select from the videos captured with your smartphone. Once all this is done, click at the top right of the screen on the word “save”, in red. There you have it, your account is ready: all you have to do is watch or post content.

The easiest way to get started is to soak up the TikTok spirit by watching videos. Click on the small magnifying glass icon (at 1) at the bottom of the screen.

[GUIDE] : TikTok how it works: the guide to using it well Part two

At the top, you can directly search for a keyword, such as “#dance” or “#chat” (in 2). Press “enter”. Just below the search bar, select “hashtags”. You can also search by music. Type the name of a song or an artist and select “sounds”. You can “add to favorites” a music or a hashtag by clicking on it and then “add to favorites”. To switch from one video to another, all you have to do is swipe the screen upwards with your finger.

The magnifying glass also allows you to find accounts. All you have to do is type a user name directly, preceded by an @. You can search for @ pitichat2, then select “users”. Click on “subscribe”. Finally, the magnifying glass tab allows you to subscribe to popular themes or challenges. Click on a suggested hashtag, then select “add to favorites” (3).

To find your favorites, you will have to go to your profile (the silhouette at the bottom right). Click on the small bookmark icon to the right of the “edit profile” button, select the desired category, for example “hashtags”.

To find your subscriptions, click on the little house at the bottom left of the screen. Videos made by people you’ve subscribed to will display here. At the top of this screen, you can also select “For you”: here you will find videos suggested by the platform.

Finally, you can also try the notifications tab (here in 3) to see if the accounts to which you are subscribed (and others) are broadcasting content.

To find your friends, you can search by username, as we explained above.

It is also possible to scan the QR code of the friend in question. In the magnifying glass tab, click on the icon to the right of the “search” area (at 1). In place of the pretty plant you see below, place your friend’s QR code. This will take you back to their profile. To find your code or his, just click on “My TikCode” (in 2).

Once you’ve figured out how to watch content, you can start interacting with those posting it. Button 1 returns to the profile of the person who posted the video (and allows you to follow them later if you wish). The 2 allows you to like the video, the 3 to comment on it (everyone can see your comment), the 4 to share it (to send it as a private message to a friend, or on another social network) or put it as a favorite. This button also allows you to respond by video (see the next point). Button 5 returns to all the videos containing the music used.

Extremely varied content can be found on TikTok. There are people who film their outfits of the day with music playing in the background, others who film their cat doing silly things or telling jokes, or performing artistic playback. Basically: you can post just about anything and everything.

To do this, click on the little “+” at the bottom of the screen. You get this:

To shoot a video, just press and hold the big pink button. The bar just above allows you to adjust the speed at which your video will be played. 2x or 3x provides a much sought-after time-lapse effect for playback videos. To the right and left of the button, you will find access to your video gallery and stickers. The bar at the very top indicates the video time. You can record several extracts by pausing between each. They will automatically follow suit.

The “Add a sound” button allows you to add music in the background of the video. You have to click on it before you start filming: learn to master it, that’s the whole point of TikTok!

On the right of the screen, you can change the camera used by the application, activate or deactivate the speed setting, activate or not the beautify mode with the magic wand (which blurs your skin), add filters (yay! ) or put a countdown for the trigger.

Once the video is made, a pink V-shaped icon appears at the bottom right of the screen. Click on it. You can then adjust the volume or other settings on the music at the top right. At the bottom left, you can add effects to video, choose video thumbnail, add filter or emoji.

Click on “next”. You can then add hashtags, tag friends, select who can see your videos, disable comments on them, disable DuoReaction video responses, share the video on other social networks or download it, save it in your drafts , then… publish your creation.

The DuoReactions are videos of a particular format. This makes it possible to hijack the video of another user, friend or not. On a video, click the share arrow at the bottom right. Select “duo”. You can create this type of content:

TikTok has been criticized for several reasons. Journalists have notably pointed out the weak data protection, the facts of cyberstalking, or the presence of inappropriate content for young users. Sexual predators can also try to come into contact with minors, sometimes posing as other young people.

If you are under the age of 18 or just don’t want anyone to see your content, you can set up your account as follows:

    • When you post a video, you are asked “who can see the video”. Do not select “public” but “my friends”.
    • In the profile tab, click on the three dots at the top right of the screen. Select “privacy settings”. There you can make it so that your profile cannot be found by typing your nickname in the search bar (this prevents other users from subscribing to it), or, less drastically, keep the account private. Your content will then only be visible to the friends you have accepted.
    • It is also possible, on the same screen (or when posting a video), to delete the comments area, or to limit the number of people who can send you a private message. If a user seems toxic to you, you can block them, and report them to TikTok.

You understood everything ? You just have to become a TikTok star! Or almost.
