During the apocalypse, the moon was destroyed and now the aftermath is raining from the sky in an unforeseen cataclysm. By gathering resources from lunar rock deposits and forming a community, survivors must find hope to advance and thrive. Shattered Hope focuses on increasing resource production in the colony while trying to keep the populace hopeful – otherwise the new Fear condition can cause problems for players and the colony as a whole.

“Shattered Hope captures the persistence of human nature in the most difficult of times. The human mind is a powerful thing, and in this expansion, mind endurance helps survivors keep going even when they’ve exceeded their physical limits,” said Lasse Liljedahl, game director for Surviving the Aftermath. “New mechanics like hope, overtime, and new resource chains add depth to the colonists’ leadership. The alternative would have fatal consequences for the entire colony.”
Key Features of Surviving the Aftermath: Shattered Hope:

- Face the “Moonfall” and take advantage of it with the new building boost mechanic
The moon is shattered in the sky and its fragments fall to earth, leaving devastation in their wake – but also moon rock deposits. Players can refine Moon Fragments and obtain Moon Dust, which can be used to increase the buildings’ production for a limited time. This new building boost mechanic is called Overtime.
- Stay hopeful and have a good time
Hope is a new global stat that decreases in-game over time and during disasters. If left too low for too long, it will trigger a new condition called “Fear” which, if left untreated, can make colonists hostile. So hope must be kept as high as possible by holding festivals in the new Colony Square building.

- New Production Chains: Adopt the colonists
When colonists experience the Fear state, players can build a trauma center to heal them. Thanks to a brand new drug called “Antistress” they will recover faster. In order to produce it, raw materials must be cultivated on the mushroom farm and then refined into the actual medicine in the medicine shack.
Surviving the Aftermath first debuted in Epic Games Store Early Access and Xbox Game Preview during PDXCON in October 2019 and was released to Steam Early Access in October 2020. In November 2021, the game left Early Access and officially launched on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch with additional content and gameplay updates. Throughout that time, Iceflake and Paradox have incorporated player feedback into over 20 major content updates. Features were delivered that expand the world map and colony system, improve combat and introduce additional end-game content that explains the origin of the apocalypse.
