Hot Lava, is focused on making a typical game of children’s imagination come true. We all play at some point not touching the ground, some younger than others (yes, we talked about the viral challenge ‘The floor is lava’ from a while ago). However, the imagination here was skillfully used in its colorful aesthetics and in polishing a challenging method of first-person platforms that will drive more than one person crazy.

It is an action game developed by Klei, the studio behind games like Don’t Starve. This game takes your childhood memories of playing “the floor is lava” to the next level. You will be jumping, sliding, swinging and hitting the walls. You can do anything but touch the ground because, you know, it’s lava. Just in case you didn’t get that part.

History of Hot Lava

You’ll start the game taking the role of Hazard, but you can also play as the other members of the Global Action Team (GAT) available on the toy shelf. You will play on different maps ranging from the school to the playground and even the basement. As of now, there are 6 maps, each with a series of levels. Mainly, you will have to go from point A to point B in each level. However, that is easier said than done. You will face many obstacles on the way.

The hard level is the “follow your sister” mission. It is incredibly frustrating and difficult. You have to follow your sister to the finish line. It sounds easy right? Well, it’s not. You have to go fast, and if you fall behind or take too long, you simply lose. Unlike all other levels, you don’t have any checkpoints, so if you die you have to start over. And, to make matters worse, you can’t even pause the game, because it will count when you stop playing and start again. This last one could be a bug, but it’s annoying that you can’t even catch a break, so I hope they fix it soon.

Gameplay of Hot Lava

Hot Lava is a game that you have to play with a Bluetooth controller. If you don’t have one, you’ll have a hard time. Onscreen controls cover the corners of the screen. To move your character’s point of view, you need to move your device to the left or right. Fortunately, it is possible to change that in the settings so that you can move your perspective with your right finger. However, thanks to all the other buttons, there will be times when you try to move and you end up using the grab button. This is something Klei needs to fix ASAP. It gets frustrating from the start. If you have one, you’ll want to connect a Bluetooth controller from the start. On top of that, the gameplay is easy to learn. It will take some getting used to, but as you progress, you’ll have more control over your jumps.

He has a unique style. From the universe to the characters to their sense of humor, you can see that the team took their time to get the aesthetic right, and they did. The models and animations are very well done. And while the characters are clean and simple, you can give them a different look with the collectibles you’ll get from each level.

Overall, Hot Lava is a fun parkour/action game with a lot of potential. Once they fix things like the control layout, it will become a solid game on Apple Arcade. Until then, Hot Lava is still a great game for people with the right gear, namely a Bluetooth controller. The environment and the unique universe will keep you entertained from start to finish, and thanks to the different beginnings and collectibles that exist.
