How to create a QR code to share a website in Chrome

We are going to explain to you how to create a QR code to share a web in Chrome, a function for mobiles and desktop that although it is hidden and not activated, it is available in the stable version of the browser. The bad news is that in the mobile version of Chrome, the feature is only available on Android, so iOS users will not be able to use it until it is activated.

We are going to use the sharing function by generating a QR by using the Chrome Flags, which is a list of experimental functions that you can activate, although its operation is not always adequate. We are going to start the article with the steps to activate and use this function on Android, and then we’re going to do the same but with the desktop version of Chrome, where you should be able to use the feature on Windows, GNU / Linux and macOS.

Share a website by QR code on your mobile

The first thing we have to do is activate this function before we can use it. To do this, open Chrome on your Android mobile, and in the address bar write chrome: // flags / and go to the address. This will not take you to a website, but to a configuration panel with the experimental features of Chrome.

Once you are inside the flags page, you have to go to the search engine at the top and write #chrome. Just by writing this start of code, the first three results will be those corresponding to the 3 flags that you must activate for the feature to work properly:

  • Chrome Share QRCodes o # chrome-share-qr-code: The QR code functionality, although it needs you to activate two other functions as well.
  • Chrome Share Screenshots or # chrome-share-screenshot. Technically it is not necessary to share web pages as a QR code, but it is another way to share web pages: as a screenshot, also accessible from the new share menu.
  • Chrome Sharing Hub or # chrome-sharing-hub. It is the new Chrome share menu, which shows a toolbar above the classic list of applications, and that you need to activate to be able to use the previous options.

What you have to do is click on the Default button of each of the three options, and on their pop-up menus select the Enabled option to activate them. When you have activated all three, click on the Relaunch button that you have at the bottom right, and that is used to restart Chrome that these flags are activated.

Now that you have activated the function, you only have to use it. To do this, go to the page that you want to share. When you are in it, click on the menu button that appears at the top right with a three-dot icon. When the menu opens, click on the Share option that will appear to you in it.

You will enter the new sharing menu that you have activated. In this menu, click on the option called QR Code to go to the section where you can share content using these codes.

You will enter the QR codes window, directly in the Share section. There, A QR code will appear already generated that points to the page you have shared, and that other people can scan with any application or camera that can be used to analyze QR codes. You also have the option to download it in case you want to use it later or send it through a messaging application.

And in the event that your mobile does not have an application to read QR, not even the camera, in this window you also have a Search tab to read them without needing anything else. Of course, you will have to give Chrome permissions to be able to access the camera of your device.

Share a website by QR code on PC

In the PC version of Chrome everything is much simpler, although the starting point is still to activate the function. To do this, open Chrome on your computer, and in the address bar write chrome: // flags / and go to the address. This will not take you to a website, but to a configuration panel with the experimental features of Chrome.

Once you are inside the flags page, you have to go to the search engine at the top and write QR. Just by typing this, among the results you will see the Enable sharing page via QR Code flag, which is the one we are going to need.

What you have to do now is click on the Default button of Enable sharing page via QR Code and change it to Enabled when you see the menu to choose your state. When you have activated the option, click on the Relaunch button that you have at the bottom right, and that is used to restart Chrome to start working

Now, all you have to do is enter the web you want to share with Chrome. You will see that now on the right side of the address bar there is a QR code icon. Click on this icon to share the web you are on right now.

In doing so, Chrome will open a window with the generated QR code, and this code can be scanned with any application dedicated to QR. Chrome will allow you to edit the address of the QR code, and you will also have a download button to download and share it by other means.
