How to install an app from USB on a Samsung Smart TV with Tizen

Today we are going to explain how you can install applications on a Samsung television with Tizen using a USB stick, that is, downloading them and copying them to a USB instead of installing them from the official application store on the TV itself.

The application store of Samsung televisions allows you to install various applications, but you may come across an application that is not available. If your developers have prepared it, it is possible install applications from a USB stick on some Samsung TVs with Tizen.

1. Check the model of your TV

When it comes to installing applications from a USB memory on a Samsung TV, there are mainly dthe different types. You must install the correct model for your TV, although the truth is that if you make a mistake, nothing happens, but simply the application will not be installed.

To know what type of applications your TV supports, you will need to know the model name. You don’t need to know the whole string of letters and numbers, but the letter that appears after the inches. In the example below, it would be the letter in yellow (the F).

This is so depending on whether your TV is a model J, K, M, N, Q, R, T or on the contrary a model E, ES, F, H, J4 or J52 you will have to download one file or another. In some cases, the developers of unofficial applications for Samsung Smart TVs will have created a version for these two models. In other cases, there will only be a version for one of them (generally the first, which are more recent models).

2. Download the correct file

When you are clear about the model of your TV, it is time to download the correct version of the application you want to install. As we mentioned before, there are mainly two versions, and you must choose the correct one for your television:

  • For teles with model J, K, M, N, Q, R and T: Also sometimes called the “Tizen widget”. It is easy to recognize applications in this format as the first folder in the compressed file is called userwidget.

  • For teles with model E, ES, F, H, J4 and J52: Also sometimes called the “Orsay widget”. In this case it can be recognized that the main folder is not “userwidget”, but the name of the application.

3. Prepare the USB

With the file downloaded, it is time to copy it to the USB memory that you will use to install the application on the TV. There are no specific minimum requirements, although it is recommended that it be formatted in FAT16 or FAT32 format, otherwise the TV it might not detect it correctly.

For the rest, you must extract files from ZIP archive of the application on the USB memory. We recommend that you delete any other files on the USB stick before connecting it to the television.

If you have trouble in the following steps, you can try with a smaller USB stick that you have at home, to maximize the chances that the TV will recognize it satisfactorily.

4. Disable app update

This is not necessary on all models, but to make sure that the application you have installed will still be there the next time you turn it off and on, it is highly recommended that you go to the TV settings and deactivate the automatic update of applications.

The menu in question may vary from model to model, but you should find it at Smart Hub settings. You can continue updating the rest of the applications manually, from the TV applications menu.

5. Connect the USB to the TV

The only thing you lack is connect the pendrive to a USB port on the TV that is available. Generally, anyone will do, but if nothing happens after connecting it, you can try another USB port.

If everything went well, at the top of the TV you will receive a notice that an app is being installed and another when it has finished installing. You can open your new application from the menu, as if it were any other.
