An iOS device can be accessed in a number of ways, including via USB. For example, through the Lightning connector, an intruder can download all the necessary data from an iPhone (or iPad), crack the passcode, and unlock the device.

“USB Restricted Mode”Introduced in iOS 12, disables charging and data transfer via Lightning if it’s been more than an hour since you last unlocked your iPhone or iPad. In other words, even if an intruder gets hold of a device, they won’t be able to extract data from it via USB if enough time has passed since it was last unlocked.

The mode is on by default, but there may be circumstances where you want to turn it off. For example, to charge your phone from a friend’s computer or to use CarPlay on long-distance trips when you can’t unlock your iPhone for a long period of time.
