Jim Ryan on PS5 game pricing, PS4 support and the exclusivity of the new God of War.

Starting Titles

IN BRIEF:

  • Jim Ryan believes PlayStation has never been able to enjoy such a good starter set of games;
  • also does not support the negative opinions on the new prices of high-budget productions on PS5 and the maintenance of support for PS4;
  • the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment has not confirmed that God of War Ragnarok will be an exclusive title on PS5.

Telegraph managed to interview the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, and pulled a lot of information from him about the overall feeling of launching the next generation. The man expresses a lot of joy related to the titles that appeared with the PS5:

I spent a lot of time comparing the present to what we did on previous generations, and I think the games that we released with the console’s premiere, as well as the titles to debut in 2021, are by far the strongest list we have ever prepared. I am extremely happy about it.

Support for PS4 console users

Ryan also spoke about the release of most of the upcoming games not only on PlayStation 5, but also on PlayStation 4, because this topic raises a lot of controversy among fans who fear that it may affect the pace of technological development of games for next-generation consoles:

First, our PS5 versions of games are designed to get the best out of the console’s features. So I don’t see anything wrong with offering the PS5 version to the PS5 community and the PS4 version to the PS4 community.

We have a PS4 community of 100 million players. It would be a bad move to turn your back on them too soon. The more that they were attached to the PS4 this year even more than usual due to the “lockdown”. They use their PlayStation consoles and are very happy with them. So why would we stop providing them with games?

Prices for new PS5 games

It would also be a sin not to address the costs of using PlayStation 5 now. Although the console costs relatively little, depending on the version from PLN 1849 to PLN 2300, the initial price of games designed for the new generation has been increased. The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, however, does not believe that it is overstated:

I believe it’s a fair price. If you measure how many hours of fun a video game like Demon’s Souls has given you, and then compare it to any other form of entertainment, you will draw very simple conclusions.

I can also assure you that the reports suggesting that we have considered even higher prices for AAA games are categorically false.

God of War Ragnarok

Jim Ryan was also asked if the next installment of the God of War series will be an exclusive title on PlayStation 5. However, he did not answer this question in the affirmative, saying that as of today he is unable to take any specific position.

Cloud and potential streaming services

The interview also covered the topic of the increasingly popular cloud gaming. Microsoft, Google and Amazon services were mentioned, so what are Sony’s plans in this matter?

We are quite active in this area, we have PlayStation Now, first of all. I think the implementation of the cloud on a massive scale – and by “mass scale”, I mean the scale that we achieve with console businesses and aspire to with PlayStation 5, which has just debuted – it may happen. But certainly not in the next year or two.

But you know, we are already active when it comes to the cloud. And this is an area where we will invest a lot of time and energy.

Some lucky people will be able to see the power of PlayStation 5 and the quality of games released on it in just 2 days, on November 19. Then the official Polish premiere of the console will take place.
