Well known is the fact that Alan Moore has renounced practically all adaptations of his comics. In fact, he recently demanded that DC hand over to Black Lives Matter any future profits derived from those television or film versions of his works. However, there is one adaptation that is officially stated to be liked, but it is also one of the least known.
Everyone remembers ‘V for Vendetta’, ‘Watchmen’ or ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’, but his career is much longer and in 1985 he published ‘For the man who has everything’an adventure starring Superman in which the drawings were done by Dave Gibbons. His adaptation had to wait almost 20 years to arrive, but he did so with the approval of Moore himself at all times.
Taking care of the shapes
Some of you may already know that I am talking about the television series ‘Justice League Unlimited’created by Bruce Timm (‘Batman: The Animated Series’) in 2004. He was the producer Dwayne McDuffie who proposed to Timm to adapt Moore and Gibbons’ comic, but by then the former’s disdain for adaptations of his comics was already well known. This led to Timm not being comfortable with the idea of not having Moore’s support, so he decided to contact Moore personally to see if he was okay with him, and this was his response:
It would be an honor if you adapted it into your series.
Once they had achieved what seemed impossible, they got to work and ‘For the Man Who Has Everything’ ended up being the basis for the second episode of the first season of ‘Justice League Unlimited’. Timm himself commented before its premiere that he had the support of Moore “”.
The truth is that Moore has never spoken publicly about the episode, in which some changes were introduced with respect to the original comic to tell the story of how Batman and Wonder Woman try to surprise Superman in his fortress of solitude to give him a birthday gift, but once there they find him immobilized by another gift that Mongul has sent him. Nevertheless, We do have proof that he was happy with the result.
It was McDuffie who revealed in 2011 that they had sent a copy of the episode to Moore and that he liked it. Taking into account how little the latter cuts his tongue – the scolding he gave to him is unforgettable. Damon Lindelof when he asked him for help in his adaptation of ‘Watchmen’ for HBO -, there is no choice but to assume that it is something true. Quite an achievement of which it is logical that those involved in him want to take pride in it, since there is not a single compliment from him to any other adaptation of his work.
