What is the origin of Creepers, the most popular creatures in the history of Minecraft

It is the best-selling video game of all time and no wonder. Minecraft has become a global mass phenomenon since its launch more than a decade ago and since then we have seen how the block fever has spread to all corners. Among all the images in Markus Persson’s work, The striking Creeper has always stood out.

A strange being, green in color with an unfriendly face and with the curious habit of exploding into a thousand pieces as soon as it approaches less than three blocks away from us. Those damn explosions have caused more than one accident and that was precisely what caused the origin of the most famous mob in the title.

It all arose during one of the earliest versions of Minecraftback in 2009. Notch, the creator, was trying to create a pig, but made a small mistake by getting confused about the height and length of the modeling he was working with. This is how he explained it in the documentary Minecraft: The Story of Mojang:

“The Creepers were a mistake. I don’t have any modeling programs to make the models, I just write them in code. And I accidentally made them tall instead of long, so it was like a tall thing with four little feet. And that became in the Creeper. Instead of a pig.”

As if that were not enough, the creature had the characteristic that the AI made it constantly look at the player and follow him. Persson was amused by this, he told a friend about it and they both agreed that it would be very funny if the new creature exploded. Besides, the face he created for the Creeper was intended to instill danger and gave it its characteristic green color thinking of camouflaging it among the nature of the Minecraft world.

The developer was quite new at that time in shaping his works, which is why he apologized for the graphics being so simple. However, one small blunder helped create one of the hallmarks of his greatest work.
