Marvel’s Avengers has not yet been released, but has already raised its first controversies: a few days ago, the developers of Crystal dynamics announced that the next GaaS dedicated to Marvel superheroes will have Spider Man as an additional character after launch, but only on PS4 versions, thanks to the influence of Sony.

The news, of course, hasn’t been well received by PC and Xbox One gamers, who will end up with less additional content than the PS4 edition. Unfortunately, the decision was not within the powers of the developer or the publisher.

Either way, Crystal Dynamics takes pride in the work they’ve done with the character and want players to see Spider-Man as some sort of icing on the cake that is Marvel’s Avengers. In a recent interview with WCCFTech, the creative director Shaun Escayg and the combat director Naples wins, further spoke of the Wall Climber’s presence, also revealing that his presence will be accompanied by a small playable story arc.

Below, we present the excerpt from the interview:

WccftechA lot of those angry fans also pointed out that you couldn’t significantly include Spider-Man in the story because he can’t appear on PC, Xbox, or Stadia at all. Can you comment?

Shaun Escayg: Without obviously providing spoilers, the window in which you will see our version of Spider-Man will adapt to our story. Again, obviously I have to get around it because I can’t talk about it. But just know that he’s our Spider-Man, that’ll be in our story, and he’ll fit into this world, into this gap that happened on day A and after.

Naples wins: Spider-Man will join the main arc and story progression. There will be no trade or anything in that line. We have our plans, our heroes, the stories, the challenges and the escalation of the gameplay that we have planned. Everything is going as planned. And then, on top of all of those things, we also have Spider-Man. It is not possible to exchange or modify anything to adapt it. It’s got to fit into the big plan and all these things that we’ve already established. It’s like Sony said, “Hey, can you add that, as a sort of icing on the cake?” But that doesn’t affect or change him in any way. This plan is still progressing as originally planned and designed.

Wccftech: Can we assume then that he’ll have a personal mini-arc in Marvel’s Avengers?

Shaun Escayg: Absolutely yes.

In short, the developers have confirmed that the sudden addition of Spider-Man will not change the original plans for Marvel’s Avengers, but will be just a very interesting extra for PS4 owners.

What do you think?

Remember that Marvel’s Avengers will be released on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia on September 4, while it will arrive later in the year on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
