Balance is always a bit difficult for superheroes. By definition, they are overwhelming and almost invincible. In the next Marvel’s Avengers, developers will approach this problem in two ways. On the one hand through history, on the other hand through mechanics and adversaries.
“The Avengers have been disbanded, they are banned,” Creative Director Shaun Escayg tells me. “Tony Stark no longer has control of Stark Industries. And the Hulk, usually an angry, angry beast, fights guiltily over losing Cap. We took the Avengers and confronted them with the most intimate human concerns and conflicts they had to deal with. what is Iron Man without his technology? When you play, you experience the rebirth of these heroes and you see them become more and more powerful. And when it comes to gameplay, there is an overlap with the historical aspects of this challenge for the Avengers: “They’re not just normal robots,” says Scot Amos, studio manager at Crystal Dynamics. “Do you remember Tarleton? He started as a partner of Stark Industries and after the Avengers disbanded AIM took over [Advanced Idea Mechanics] all this technology, George Tarleton and his team have all this research and this technology. ”
“There is an allusion to this in the video [Once an Avenger]that you have seen, ”he explains. Tarleton tells Tony he should be familiar with this shield technology. Then Tony replies, “What do you steal next?” My hairstyle? ‘AIM has this Iron Man-level technology and it goes beyond that. It’s about defeating superheroes through science, stealing those powers from overwhelming people, the Inhumans.
There are a number of visual allusions to this: “Some of these robots look familiar, they have a power source in their chests and well-known weapons. And they use different types of shields which are even capable of repelling Mjölnir. They are extremely powerful machines, which essentially took the forces of the Avengers and used them against them. And it’s not just machines. AIM is a scientific organization. In addition to MODOK and machines, there are also scientists. ”
“There was a fight in the middle of the wasteland that I played with my team,” Amos recalls. “I was in a war zone and then these guys suddenly appeared, we call them guards. They are an allusion to how scientists at AIM have shifted into high gear from the comics. One of them shot that beam of yellow energy in the back that I didn’t know before. It’s called SPIN technology [Super-Power Inhibiting Nanobots] and is taken from the comic strip “.
“It’s literally from Marvel Lore and these scientists invented it because they’re people like you and me, but they brought in the technology to help them fight superheroes,” he explains. “And technologies like that appear in the middle of a fight. I want to carry out my heroic attacks, it hits me and my energy wanes. And I think, ‘Oh my god, what the fuck is this?’ This is one of the things that Vince [Napoli, Combat Director] love because it’s part of Marvel’s DNA. ”
“It lets you realize that there are really smart people working at AIM and that they have technologies comparable to superheroes,” Amos notes. As an example, he names one of the runners from the latest gameplay video. “An energetic core makes it work and inside one of the scientists at AIM is located and operated the thing. This is how we give these normal people the strength to take an Avenger. We had to balance the opponents, the entire threat and MODOK with his intelligence. Ultimately he controls all of these robots, basically you are fighting a single huge army all the time. MODOK shares all of its different abilities against superheroes. ”
“It’s a big fight between the superpowers and science,” he says. “Not only in historical terms, also in terms of mechanics. Of course, you are right when you say that on the one hand we have gods. The god of thunder with his lightning powers and surface damage. On the other, there’s the science that exploits or at least resists some of its abilities, which gives us some interesting options for level, gear, and abilities. For example, you can create a flash with additional pym particles. you shrink those runners down to one size so the carcass can catch them and beat them. ”
“It’s these struggles that escalate with a threat befitting the Avengers because we’re essentially pitting them against their own abilities,” Amos said. “And at the same time, we make sure they feel powerful because they are working together. You give the other heroes on your team the chance to start with the final blow. “
