The Mega Evolutions of Pokémon Go They allow you to increase the power of your Pokémon by transforming them into a much more powerful version of themselves.
They were originally introduced in Pokémon X and Y, and as in this game, to megaevolve our Pokémon in Pokémon Go we will need specific stones that we will have to use in combat.
Mega Evolutions are temporary transformations that require the use of a new type of object: Mega Energy.

What Mega Evolutions are currently available in Pokémon Go?
Although a multitude of Mega Evolutions have arrived in Pokémon Go, they are not all available at the same time. That means, if you want to complete your Mega Pokédex, you will have to keep an eye out to see which Mega Pokemon are available in Mega Raids. If not, you will have to wait for them to reappear.
In December 2020 there are three Mega Evolutions in Mega Raids:
- Mega Charizard X
- Mega Gengar
- Mega Abomasnow
Additionally, Mega Charizard X will be more powerful during the first half of the month.
How Mega Evolutions Work in Pokémon Go
Mega Evolutions are an additional and temporary evolution that some specific Pokémon – such as Kanto’s initial ones – can perform.
To Mega Evolve a Pokémon in Pokémon Go, you will need a resource called Mega Energy. Once a Pokémon has been Mega Evolved, it will remain in that form for a limited time, and can be used in different battles.
You can see how much Mega Evolution time your Pokémon has left on the PC screen.
Once the Pokémon has returned to its normal form, the level of Mega Energy you will need to Mega Evolve it again will drop.
Mega Evolutions will debut in Mega Raids
Other things you should know about Mega Evolutions:
- You can only Mega Evolve one Pokémon at a time. If you Mega Evolve a second Pokémon, the first Pokémon will return to normal.
- Shadow Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve.
- Clone Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve either.
- Mega Evolutions will appear in the section of the Pokedex called “Mega Pokedex”.
- There will be two new medals in the game: one to collect all Mega Evolutions, and one that will count the total of Mega Evolved Pokémon.
For those who are eager to try Mega Evolutions, Niantic has confirmed that the month of September will be full of themed events related to them.
How to get mega energy in Pokémon Go
Each Pokémon has its own specific mega-energy, similar to how candy works within Pokémon Go. So if you want to Mega Evolve a Bulbasaur into Mega Bulbasaur, you will need Mega Energy from Bulbasaur to do so.
Mega Energy is obtained by completing Mega Raids, a new type of raid in which Mega Evolved Pokémon appear. The faster you are able to complete the confrontation, the more mega energy you will receive.
It has also been confirmed that it will appear as a reward in some special field investigations. Since Mega Energy is unique to each Pokémon type, we suspect there will be more ways to obtain it as the raid rotation unfolds.
Where can you use Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Go?
When a Pokémon is Mega Evolved, you can use it in the following ways:
- Fight in raids
- All other Pokémon in the raid will receive an attack buff. If the Pokémon share the same attack type, the improvement will be even greater.
- Fight in gyms
- Fight Team Go Rocket
- Fight friends
- Be used as companions
However, megaevolutions cannot be used to:
- Defend gyms
- Fight in the Go Fighting League (although this may change in the future)
Here’s everything you need to know about Go Beyond, including the arrival of the Gen 6 Pokémon from the Kalos region (X and Y), the level cap increase to 50, the Legacy Challenge 40, the new Candy XL and the Season of Celebration, which includes the arrival of the Deerling and Sawsbuck Forms, the Espurr Raid, and the Kalos Celebration Event.
We also have the new Field Research, two Community Days that retrieves all Pokémon from the Community Days of 2019 and 2020; the classic Pokémon Featured Hours and the start of Season 6 of the Go Fighting League.
