Netflix, CDA and Amazon to go more expensive? Streaming is to contribute to the Polish Film Institute.
IN BRIEF
The coronavirus outbreak means difficult times for various businesses. It is not easy, for example, in the field of cinematography, which suffers greatly from the suspension of shooting for new productions and the closure of cinemas. One of the industry-related bodies that has to deal with this situation is the Polish Film Institute. However, it is so much easier that, as a state institution, it can count on government assistance. Today we got to know the complementary project of the so-called anti-crisis shield 3.0, which applies to the Polish Film Institute. According to its assumptions, the largest “entities providing on-demand audiovisual media services” will have to pay 1.5% of revenues generated in our country to the Institute’s account.
The government wants to improve the situation of the Polish Film Institute in times of crisis.

The project concerns such VoD platforms as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple +, CDA.pl, Ipla (owned by Polsat) or Player.pl (owned by TVN). Some of the smallest providers are to be excluded from the fee, but it is not known which specific providers are referred to, or on what basis they will be referred to as “small” (via Money.pl).
The new tax is to guarantee the Polish Film Institute about PLN 15 million this year and a minimum of PLN 20 million in subsequent years. It was calculated based on the estimates of the European Audiovisual Observatory (via WirtualneMedia.pl). Here is how much, according to the data of this organization, individual platforms earned in our country only last year:

How much will we pay for access to Netflix if the new fees come into force?
So far, it is not known whether the draft will pass through the Sejm and Senate unchanged and when it could possibly enter into force. There is also a question whether, when the tax becomes effective, subscription prices for individual VoD platforms will go up sharply? We should know the answers in the near future.
