New HP Z2 Mini G5, Z2 Small G5 and Z2 Tower G5, characteristics and technical sheet.

The three workstations in the Z2 family just introduced by HP have a lot of personality. They differ in their form factor, which ranges from the mini format of one of them to the tower-type box of the most voluminous, passing through the desktop format chassis of the third of them. Of course, they all have something in common: a very careful design which works especially well from an aesthetic point of view on the Z2 Mini G5 model.

One of the hallmarks of this family of equipment is its ambitious configuration. And it is that inside these computers, even in the most compact, the Z2 Mini G5, we can find ourselves Intel Xeon microprocessors, NVIDIA Quadro family graphics processors, elaborate cooling systems, and SSD storage drives with a PCIe M.2 interface. These specs reveal that these workstations are comfortable with content creation, theoretically demanding as it may be.

HP Z2 Mini G5: a compact workstation for CAD users

This team is a real treat. It seems incredible that HP engineers have managed to pack such demanding components as Intel Xeon processors and NVIDIA Quadro GPUs into such a compact chassis (measures 21.6 x 21.6 cm in plan). HP proposes this Z2 Mini G5 as a compact workstation for CAD users, an approach that leaves no doubt about the vocation of this mini-PC. If we dig a little more into its specifications we will discover that it can mount up to 32 GB DDR4 and a secondary storage subsystem of up to 1.5 Tbytes, attractive figures that fit with the philosophy of this team.

The cooling system of this equipment uses two low noise fans stacked at different levels. One of them is placed above all the components and just below the upper cover, which can be removed without using any tools to facilitate access to the interior of the equipment. And the other resides just above the CPU and GPU, and next to the mechanical hard drive, which can coexist with an SSD drive up to 512GB with PCIe M.2 interface.

In the detail photo that you can see below these lines we can identify the three latest generation USB ports that this Z2 Mini G5 incorporates, one of them with USB-C format, as well as the relevant headphone output in minijack format. However, in another of the side panels of the computer there are three more USB ports (one of them type C), three DisplayPort connectors, an RJ-45 port, a Kensington security lock, and the power outlet. There is no doubt that it is a well-resolved connectivity that does not seem to have been conditioned by the limited space available in the equipment box.

HP Z2 Small Form Factor G5: more compact, but also more powerful

The next member of the Z2 family in the line of succession is the Z2 Small Form Factor G5, a team that uses a relatively compact desktop chassis, but more bulky than that of the Z2 Mini G5. This increased volume allows it to accommodate even more ambitious components than the equipment we just reviewed, such as an Intel microprocessor with 10 cores and a 125-watt TDP, or an NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 family of graphics processor. And all this in a chassis that, according to HP, is 19% more compact than the previous generation.

One of the most interesting components of this equipment is its power supply, a unit with a capacity of 450 watt power delivery, which, according to HP, is the compact power supply with the highest power delivery on the market. But here the interesting features of this PC do not end. And it is that according to its creators it has not been designed only to be used in an office; It can also be used in work spaces where there are dust and other airborne particles. The components that are responsible for preventing these particles from entering the interior of the equipment are filters expressly designed to make it possible to use this computer in aggressive spaces.

HP Z2 Tower G5 – designed to handle the toughest workloads

The most voluminous equipment of the Z2 family is also, as expected, the one that can accommodate the most ambitious configuration inside. Its hallmarks are similar to those of the Z2 Mini G5 and Z2 Small Form Factor G5 models, but this Z2 Tower G5 stands out by allowing the installation of microprocessors Intel Xeon with up to 10 cores and NVIDIA Quadro RTX 6000 family of graphics processors. Even so, according to HP it is 15% more compact than the previous generation.

The power supply that is responsible for keeping all the components of the PC well nourished has a capacity of 750 watt peak power delivery. And, in addition, this team, like the other members of the family, comes with a license for the ZCentral remote work software. According to HP, it is the entry-level workstation that incorporates the largest number of PCIe expansion slots and M.2 connectors, something that we cannot confirm, but which, in any case, reflects that this team contemplates expansion possibilities. at least interesting.

HP Z2 Mini G5, Z2 Small G5 and Z2 Tower G5: price and availability

The new Z2 Mini G5 will be available this same week, while the Z2 Small Form Factor G5 and Z2 Tower G5 models will hit stores on September 28. As soon as HP confirms the prices of these teams we will update this article to incorporate them.
