With iOS 14, Apple wanted to redesign the home screen of its mobile operating system for the first time in a long time, introducing changes like the new app library, new repositionable widgets, and more.
In this article we will discuss in detail all the novelties of this new home screen, so you know everything it hides and offers in iOS 14.
Although we have had widgets in today’s view for some time in our terminals, now they have been redesigned and improved, bringing new possibilities to the iOS environment in this new update. More information, resizable and, for the first time, available on the home screen.
Widgets of different sizes
IOS 14’s new widgets allow us to adapt them to the space we want them to use with up to 3 different sizes: small, medium and large, and offer different levels of information depending on the size we choose.
With the Weather widget for example, as we choose one size or another, we will go from the current climate and temperature to an extended view of the next few hours in the medium size and up to a multi-day view seen in the larger one. size, all without having to access the app.
These widgets will also allow in some cases to choose the information we want to display. For example, in the Notes app, we can choose to see a particular note, the total, or a list in 2 sizes, depending on what information we want to display. The Notes app has 3 sizes, but 4 display options.
Piles de widgets
Another novelty that comes with the new widgets is the ability to create stacks of them, so in one space we will have several widgets that we can rotate to our need or configure using the function Smart Stack so that the system shows us which one may interest us the most at any time. This function learns from our habits to know which widget to show us at any time.
Widget de suggestions Siri
Although it may look similar to Smart Stack, This widget will show us the Siri suggestions that we could see before when using the search bar on the iPhone. Although there is now a widget available for this, we will continue to find Siri suggestions as always by swiping up and down on the home screen, except that with the widget we will save this step.
Home screen widgets
Widgets stick the jump, and now they will also be available on the terminal home screen and on the adjacent ones that we use, being able to place them at the end where we want. These can be added from the widget gallery to the length and width of the different app pages we use, just enter edit mode and click on the « + » in the upper right corner.
A page can only be made up of apps, as it has done so far, completely with widgets or with both options. Widgets occupy application spaces, the smallest being the size of 4 applications in 2 × 2, the medium in 2 × 4 and the largest in 4 × 4..
A new gallery of widgets
The customization and organization of our new widgets is now done from the new gallery, which we can access as we said with the edit mode active, and where We can choose which widgets we want to display, in what size and with what information if possible. From this gallery we can exclusively manage the widgets available for both the home screen and today’s view, however, the third-party app widgets we have used so far will continue to do so. be modified from the tab Edit, at the end of today’s view.

App library: all your apps automatically organized in one place
Along with the new and redesigned widgets and their functionality comes the new Application Library, a place where we can automatically organize all our apps in different folders according to their theme.
To access this new app library, just go to the last home page and swipe right again. Here we will find in the first two positions a folder with our most recent additions, as well as another with suggestions based on our usage. The rest will be organized according to their function, in sections such as productivity, social, entertainment or creativity.
In the application library, we can also search among our applications thanks to the search bar located at the top of it, and if we enter it with the home screen edit mode active, we can delete apps from our device as if we were on the home screen.
On the other hand in this new library is lack of personalized organization, because the apps are intelligently located according to the system and the names of the folders are given according to their content, so we don’t have the same customization as in the home screen folders.
The application library also displays alerts pending participation, such as on the home screen, if we have a notification in an app registered in the library, it will be displayed with a red circle and the number of pending notifications in the corner, as it has done so far.
Hide Home screen pages and apps
Thanks to the existence of the application library now we can hide individual apps and full home screen pages, leaving only those we use most often at hand and reducing the many pages that many users have displayed to have their applications.
For this, we only have to enter the edit mode of the home screen and click on the points that the different pages show, from there a new screen will open where we can select which screens we want to show and which ones are hidden by selecting them individually.
To hide applications from you, in edit mode, if we click on the symbol « -« in the left corner of the app icon, we will be asked if we want to add the app to the library or if we want to remove it.
If we keep the pressure on an app from the library that we have hidden, we will instead be asked if we want to add that app to the home screen.
Finally, we can configure the new downloaded apps to go straight to the library instead of being added to the home screen. We can configure this from Settings-
