New iPad Air and iPad mini, features, price and technical sheet

It was rumored that Apple had new models of its iPad in development, and today it has confirmed that data with the launch of the new 10.5-inch iPad Air and 7.9-inch iPad mini.

In both cases we have Apple Pencil holder and with the presence of the powerful A12 Bionic processor to offer remarkable performance. Retina displays with True Tone technology round out a few devices that make the iPad family more diverse than ever.

There are important changes, but not so much abroad where for example 6.1mm thickness is maintained but that diagonal increase over the previous iPad Air makes the tablet slightly heavier.

Still, the changes in the interior are notable, especially for the presence of that Apple A12 Bionic processor and also for two more striking storage options, 64 and 256 GB.

It’s funny how in both models Touch ID sensor remains which has disappeared on iPhones but seems to still make sense on these iPad models.

The Lightning connector is also maintained, while although the front camera does not change (8 Mpixels f / 2.4) the front does, and in a striking way, since now we have a 7 Mpixel sensor and not the old one of only 1.2 megapixels.

Frames don’t disappear on iPads

The new Apple tablets stand out for a very similar bet in almost all its specifications which is based on both the support of the Apple Pencil and the presence of the 7nm Apple A12 Bionic processor.

These elements are joined to a design in which the thickness coincides (6.1 mm) but which is logically different due to those diagonals that differentiate one from the other. The frames, yes, they are thick, especially in the lower part and in the upper part, where the traditional symmetry of these devices and the “old” iPhone made the TouchID sensor obliged to have frames of considerable dimensions.

Considering the equal design linesWe could almost consider the iPad mini as an “iPad Air mini”, or the iPad Air as an “iPad mini Plus”, to put it another way, because in essence we find tablets that are very similar to each other.

Two more ambitious and more expensive models

Apple seemed to have preferred to simplify its catalog of tablets in recent times, but with this move it takes the opposite step and retrieve two of the “old” limbs of the iPad family.

In both cases the jump with respect to their predecessors is enormous, but it is that these products have not been renewed for years. The iPad mini 4 arrived in September 2015, while the iPad Air 2 was launched in October 2014 and was abandoned in March 2017 to be replaced by the iPad (2017).

Curiously, now both return to complete the catalog of an Apple that has resurrected both options for complement the iPad (2018) than with its 9.7-inch screen It also stood out for the Apple Pencil support although its processor is the A10 and it also offers smaller storage capacities (32 and 128 GB).

Thus, Apple’s proposal with these devices is unique: it raises more ambitious alternatives to the iPad (2018) and even interestingly brings them closer to the powerful iPad Pro (with the improved A12X processor), but that also makes the prices of both tablets are high.

It is a strategy that has been following for a long time and that, for example, has made the price jump with the iPhone X and its successors, the iPhone Xr, Xs and Xs Max has been remarkable. The formats are certainly interesting and those improved features are welcome, but it will be interesting to see how the market is receiving these new models.
