For the second consecutive year, you have an appointment, from this Tuesday, September 5, on the site of “La Dépêche du Midi” (www.ladepeche.fr) to elect the best Gers players of last season. The latter will be rewarded during a beautiful evening in Auch on September 28th. We start with the National 2 players.
Such a first required only a second edition. After Mirande in 2022, it is in Auch, at the Salle du Mouzon, that the big family of Gers rugby has an appointment this year. Organized once again in partnership with the Departmental Rugby Committee and its formidable team, the “amateur rugby trophies” of “La Dépêche du Midi” will highlight these players, referees, coaches and other volunteers who make the Gers at the departmental, regional or national level. level.
At first, it is the players who will be put forward. The latter were selected by a jury and have been voted on since September 5 by the readers of “La Dépêche du Midi” in order to elect the one who most deserves the “best player” trophy in his category.
The opportunity to focus on certain Gers clubs which, for some, have achieved superb courses last year.
Starting with Auch and Fleurance. The RCA and the ASF were in their first season in National 2 and shone there with a qualification for the final stages. Both teams passed the play-offs with flying colors before losing in the quarter-finals. Two unfinished setbacks, but Fleurantins and Auscitains can be proud of them, they were among the 8 best teams of this 2022-2023 season.
Also note the excellent courses of Gimont and Nogaro in Federal 3 since the ESG and the AAN gave themselves the right to access the upper floor thanks to superb results during the final stages, the Nogaroliens falling in the quarter of final. They therefore join the EAB XV in Federal 2.
This Thursday, September 28 will be synonymous with celebration. The Gers rugby festival during which players, managers, volunteers and all those who bring the oval ball to life within the department will be duly congratulated.
In National 2, they are four players to be selected, two Auscitains and two Fleurantins. 7
Théo Thierry, 28 years old, RC Auch, third row
Child of the club, since he left Auch only one season since 2010, Théo Thierry is one of the basic men of Grégory Menkarska. The proof, the third line is captain of this team. His ability to tackle hard throughout a match is a valuable asset for the RCA, as is his consistency at this level since Thierry played 23 out of a possible 24 matches last year. It is not he who shines the most, but his slaughter is essential in this National 2 championship. Captain of a team eliminated in the quarter-finals, his appointment is anything but a surprise.
Ludovic Bevilacqua, 36, AS Fleurance, third row
He too is a captain and he too is a driving force in his team. Ludovic Bevilacqua played the last season of his career last year. Unfortunately, this ended in an exclusion in the play-off. The only false note in an exceptional season during which he courageously guided Fleurance towards direct qualification for the final. The third line has had strong moments since 2019 with the ASF, this 2022-2023 season was the high point.
Mathieu Vignes, 31 years old, RC Auch, back
Mathieu Vignes had a season of rare regularity last year. Outstanding scorer, formidable counter-attacker and RCA executive, the Rouge et Blanc full-back rarely disappoints. Never injured, the one who was trained at the club scored 241 points in total. Co-top scorer for the club with Maxime Capberbet and Rémy Huertas (8 tries each), Vignes also scored 49 penalties and 27 conversions throughout the year. If the RCA had an exceptional season with this third place in the regular season, its rear and metronome is no stranger to it.
Luc Espinasse, 29, AS Fleurance, centre/winger
Always very consistent, Luc Espinasse showed last year that his team still needed him. Whether in the center or on the wing, the one who has been at the club since 2011 has only missed two games. His play-off match against La Seyne-sur-Mer, where he scored a try and made an XXL match, proves that this 29-year-old player has extraordinary abilities. Vice-captain of the ASF, his place is as important in the locker room as on the pitch and this appointment is well deserved.
