The sub-prefect of La Rochelle announced this Wednesday evening on BFMTV that a 10-year-old child was between life and death after being crushed by a falling tree in Montpellier-de-Médillan, near Saintes in Charente Maritime.

“The emergency services were activated shortly before 3 p.m. for an injured child, trapped under a tree and in cardio-respiratory arrest. He was able to be resuscitated by the firefighters and the Samu, then transported by helicopter to the Poitiers hospital in absolute emergency, ”described Emmanuel Cayron, also secretary general of the prefecture of Charente-Maritime.

Winds between 50 and 80 km/h

While many departments in the west of France, including Charente-Maritime, have been placed by Météo-France on yellow alert for strong winds, the sub-prefect announced that the first elements of the investigation left “very probably” to think that “the wind was bending the tree that fell on the child”.

According to him, the winds, “without being exceptional”, oscillated between 50 and 80 km / h. He also gave more details about the circumstances of the accident. The facts took place in the garden of a private residence during a family reunion. Twenty children and ten adults were present.

“A family member who is a doctor was able to provide first aid and prepare for the intervention of the firefighters and the Samu. (…) He was evacuated with a head trauma when he had just been resuscitated, ”added Emmanuel Cayron.
