a Muslim high school could lose its funding because of a program deemed Salafist

The prefect of the North, Georges-François Leclerc, should request, this Monday, November 27, the termination of the contract which binds the French State to the Averroès high school, in Lille, the largest private Muslim high school in France. Indeed, according to a report revealed by Europe 1, the establishment promotes Salafist Islam in course. Additionally, teachers rely on The 40 hadiths of Imam An Nawawi to teach their classes. A book which advocates non-mixing in the workplace and the ban on a woman being examined by a male doctor in particular.

According to the prefect, this book enters » in total contradiction with republican values”. A position which is not shared by the director of the establishment, Éric Dufour, whose comments were reported by RMC: » This bookis not studied in class. This is support potentially available to teachers. And I can tell you they don’t even use it. This book isn’t even here in the facility. »

The financing problem

In class, the report points to a lack of diversity between boys and girls, but also “a relativity of scientific facts taught in SVT, particularly on evolution” Regarding educational staff, the deputy director, Makhlouf Mameche, positioned himself, in 2016, “against secularism and for a global Islamic state”. Two other members of this staff are respectively authors of a sermon against Israel, qualified “Fascist, barbaric and monstrous state”and an article entitled “End French democracy”.

In addition to the education provided at the Averroès high school, the report also shows the origin of the establishment’s financing. Indeed, some of them would be illicit and come from Qatar. Also, while the Islamic Center of Villeneuve d’Ascq had a debt of 245,000 euros to the establishment, it would still have granted a new loan of 75,000 euros.

The situation was denounced by Xavier Bertrand, the president of the region, in 2017, who condemned it by refusing to subsidize the high school: » We have been sounding the alarm for years and years. Today, we feel less alone, but we still have lost years”he told RMC.
