a Russian mission to fight an epidemic of intestinal infection – RT in French

A team of Russian specialists has been sent to the Republic of Congo to deal with an outbreak of intestinal infection. The incidence of the disease has been divided by 16 and cooperation will be maintained with Moscow, according to the Russian agency.

“The result of the work of the Rospotrebnadzor team in the Republic of Congo was a 16-fold decrease in the incidence of acute intestinal infections”, welcomed, on September 4, the Russian federal consumer protection agency .

This announcement follows a mission carried out from August 2 to 25 in Congo to help local authorities in their fight against the spread of dangerous intestinal infections. Mission which, specifies the press release, took place in the city of Dolisie, epicenter of this epidemic which caused several deaths.

This mission was decided last July by President Vladimir Putin following the request, during the second Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg, by the President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso.

In 48 hours, Rospotrebnadzor announces that it has chartered and sent a team of five doctors to the site with the necessary equipment to work in the field, in particular a mobile infectious disease laboratory.

For four weeks, Russian epidemiologists and infectiologists implemented “anti-epidemic measures”, “carried out research to identify sources of infection” and carried out an “inspection of water supply circuits”, says l agency in its press release.

Local doctors have also been trained in infection control techniques and equipment has been given to the Congolese authorities so that they can continue research in the field of infectious diseases, underlines Rospotrebnadzor, which specifies that the cooperation between Moscow and Brazzaville in this area will be maintained. .

This is not the first such mission carried out by Rospotrebnadzor abroad. In 2021, the Russian agency notably sent epidemiologists to South Africa to study, with their South African colleagues, the strain of the Omicron coronavirus. In 2020, medical personnel and mobile laboratories were sent to Lebanon following the explosion that devastated the port of Beirut.

Beyond this emergency aid, Rospotrebnadzor has established scientific centers in Guinea, Vietnam, Venezuela and Burundi, where Russian researchers study infectious diseases with their local partners.
