Alouettes: the heart of the defense is back

Montreal Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia has made a big move by retaining the services of linebacker Darnell Sankey.

The 29-year-old American signed a new two-year deal on Friday. He could have taken advantage of his autonomy next February. “Mike” of the Alouettes was one of the main players in the Gray Cup victory in November.

After the September 15 loss to the Toronto Argonauts, Sankey proclaimed that the Alouettes would not lose another game by the end of the season and win top honors. This is exactly what happened.

“I’m not a guesser, I’m a winner,” Sankey said over the phone.

“I had confidence in our abilities, I knew we had the best defense in the CFL (Canadian Football League). Something happened after the Toronto game. I’m a winner and I never play with the mentality that we’re going to lose. “That’s my way of seeing things and I wanted everyone to be aware of that. »

Sankey joined the Alouettes just four days before making his prediction. He previously helped lead the Arlington Renegades to victory in the XFL Finals in May. The winner of two championships in 2023 had 31 tackles, an interception and a quarterback sack in six regular season games with the ‘Sparrows. He also had 22 tackles and two interceptions in the three playoff games.

Repeat the experiment

With this type of performance and previous success with the Calgary Stampeders (2021) and Saskatchewan Roughriders (2022), Sankey could have joined any other team on the Ambrosie circuit. However, he chose to return to Montreal, as he believes that is the place where he has the best chance of lifting the trophy again.

“The Gray Cup parade played a big role in my decision to come back to Montreal,” said Sankey. I want to relive that! The fans, the city of Montreal and my teammates, whom I love like brothers, tipped the scales. I also like the group of coaches and the role I have on this team. I feel like I can be the leader of this defense and we can still accomplish great things.

Thanks, Cody!

Thursday, during the press conference held on the sidelines of the contract extension he signed, quarterback Cody Fajardo explained that he had accepted less money to allow Maciocia to offer new contracts to the other players of conquest 2023.

There was no need to ask the general manager of the Alouettes. He settled the cases of Sankey and defensive player Shawn Lemon.

“He’s incredibly unselfish,” Sankey said of Fajardo. He has heart. He made the choice he thought was best for the team. He said he wanted to get some key parts of the club back and he did what managers do.

With a two-year deal in hand, Sankey plans to find accommodation in Montreal and come enjoy the joys of winter early next year. The California native feels at home in the Quebec metropolis.

“It reminds me of home. Where I come from, there are many cultures and people from everywhere. It’s the same thing in Montreal. I feel good. »
