Apple Adopts RCS Support on iPhone for Better Communication with Android

Apple announces the introduction of RCS support on iPhone in 2024.

Communication between iPhone and Android users is experiencing a major turning point. Apple, the Cupertino company, faced with pressure from technological giants and regulatory issues, has decided to adopt the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard on iPhones from 2024. This initiative aims to improve the messaging experience between iOS and Android operating systems.

A crucial development in iPhone messaging: the adoption of RCS

Apple’s support for RCS, confirmed for the end of 2024, represents a significant development in the world of mobile messaging. Apple told SamaGame that this feature would be included in a software update, probably iOS 18. It will bring modern messaging features for conversations between Android and iPhone users.

These features include read confirmation, input indicators, and sending and receiving high-resolution images and videos. RCS will also enable group chats, individual replies to messages, reactions to messages, and offer end-to-end encryption.

iPhones will support the RCS Universal Profile standard, already adopted by Android for several years. Apple has clarified that RCS support will coexist with iMessage, using SMS and MMS as fallbacks. However, the company has indicated that it will not open iMessage to other platforms like Android, making Nothing’s attempts to integrate iMessage support on its smartphones extremely risky. Additionally, RCS messages will continue to appear in green bubbles in Apple’s default messaging app.

Unlike SMS, RCS works over mobile data and Wi-Fi. Apple reiterated that iMessage uses a more advanced form of end-to-end encryption thanks to Advanced Data Protection. However, Apple will not use a proprietary form of encryption on RCS, but will instead work with GSMA members to improve the RCS standard itself.

Google welcomed Apple’s decision to adopt RCS support. In a statement, Google expressed its satisfaction, emphasizing the importance of modern and secure communicationregardless of the phone used, and welcomes the collaboration with Apple to implement this on iOS.
