Apple announces an additional year extension for free access to the Emergency SOS service via satellite for iPhone 14 users.
Apple has just made a significant announcement for iPhone 14 users: an extension of free access to the Emergency SOS service via satellite. This initiative extends the duration of free access to this vital service, strengthening user safety in critical situations.
Apple’s initiative for the security of iPhone 14 users
Apple initially launched Emergency SOS via satellite in 2022, exclusively for iPhone 14 models in the United States and Canada. This service allows users to send texts to emergency services even out of range of cellular and Wi-Fi networks. The feature has since been expanded to 16 countries and regions, and is now available on the iPhone 15 series.
This service expansion means that everyone who has purchased an iPhone 14 since its launch will now benefit from three years of free access to Apple’s service. The company highlights that this service has already saved many lives around the worldillustrated by a four-minute video sharing testimonials from people who have benefited from this feature.
In the competitive context, Google and Garmin also seem to be interested in this technology. Hints suggest that Google Messages could soon support satellite text, potentially in collaboration with Garmin. This partnership could use Garmin’s existing infrastructure to offer a service similar to that of Apple, which currently covers more than 150 countries.
