Beaches in São Paulo? Brazilian educational material riddled with errors

The educational content, in the form of slide shows projected in the classrooms of public schools in Brazil, contains many errors. A judge suspended the distribution of this material.

There are beaches in Sao Paulo, a city located tens of kilometers from the coast, and the polluted water causes Alzheimer’s disease: faced with the accumulation of the most absurd errors, a Brazilian judge had this Monday digital teaching materials.

This content, in the form of slideshows to be shown in public school classrooms, had been prepared by the Secretariat of Education of the state of Sao Paulo, the most populous in Brazil.

On one of them, we can read for example that the city of Sao Paulo has beaches, while the nearest is more than 70 km away. Another paper misleads students by claiming that mercury-polluted water can cause Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.

The circulation of these contents suspended

If they had followed this educational material to the letter, the teachers would also mention a discovery by the physicist Léon Foucault dating from 1985, the date of the latter’s death in 1868.

Judge Simone Rodrigues, of the Court of Justice of Sao Paulo, ordered the suspension of the circulation of these contents “until they are corrected”, in order “not to compromise the quality of teaching”.

According to the G1 news site, Sao Paulo state authorities corrected the errors and fired those responsible.

The government of Sao Paulo had already sparked controversy last month, announcing the replacement of textbooks by digital versions in many public establishments from next year.
