Are you a Lord of the Rings fan or do you want to please a fan at the end of the year? Here is a selection of three games with increasing levels of difficulty.
Similo The Lord of the Rings
For the whole family !
In this classic deduction game, revisited for the theme with sublime illustrations, both naive and extremely precise, you must identify one character among twelve, by elimination. A Narrator will choose characters from his hand that move away from or resemble the objective as closely as possible. The game will be aimed at both fans and laymen because the clues can be both literary and visual.
The strong points of Similo The Lord of the Rings:
- Very accessible
- Beautifully illustrated
- Even for those who do not know the work
Similo The Lord of the Rings – from 7 years old – from 2 to 8 players – duration 10 minutes – price €13.90
The Lord of the Rings, the adventure book game
For a family of gamers!
Here is a cooperative game, where all players team up against Sauron to save Middle-earth. The book opens to form eight successive game boards, which are as many problems to solve, between strategy games and collaborative puzzles.
You will have to manage a hand of resource cards and intelligently move the characters in order to respond to the specificities of the eight scenarios, which recreate significant episodes of the trilogy: from Bree to Rivendell, from Moria to Cirith Ungol. Accumulate the support cards that will help you throughout the campaign and do not give in to the corruption of the Ring, which grows heavier from game to game.
Highlights of The Lord of the Rings Adventure Book:
- Simple rules
- A long-term adventure
- Short games
The Lord of the Rings, the adventure book game. From 10 years old – 1 to 4 players – 20 minutes per game – price €39.50

The War of the Ring, the card game
This game of confrontation of free peoples against the legions of Sauron and Saruman revolves around predefined card decks, personalized for the different factions. The War is played out in two theaters: the open battles in the iconic citadels of Middle-earth and the hunt for the ring on the shadowy trails that lead to Mount Doom.
Each round, you will have to make the most of your hand. You will have to manage your characters and objects wisely, making them act at the right time and in the right place or discarding them to be able to play your other cards. The game is played by 2 to 4 players, with a preference for 4-player mode, which requires allies to coordinate their efforts well.
An expansion planned for March 2024, Against the Shadow, will allow it to be played in cooperative mode, against the forces of evil, managed by an automa, and even solo.
Highlights of the War of the Ring:
- A constant dilemma over playing cards
- Learn to give with one hand and take with the other
- Magnificent illustrations

The War of the Ring, the board game
The great strategy game in the world of Lord of the Rings. As with its relative the card game, victory is played out as much on the battlefields as on the track of the Ring. On one side, Gondor, Rohan, Elves, Dwarves and Rangers of the North. On the other, Mordor, Isengard and the Southons. Sauron and Saruman have a clear military advantage but the Free Peoples fight with the energy of hope to allow Frodo to carry out his mission, on an enormous plateau where the conflict extends to the four corners of Middle-earth .
A system of action dice and event cards allow players to move and recruit armies, or make key characters act. The event cards played by each faction add a narrative note that rewrites the story and draws on many little-known characters and facts from the trilogy. Will the company pass through Moria? Will Aragorn defend Minas Tirith? Perhaps Gandalf will perish against the Witch King?
It is a demanding game reserved for experienced players. It is possible to play with 2 to 4 players, but the two-player mode remains the most enjoyable, so count on 4 hours of play and a good meal with your best friend.
Several expansions, including one already translated into French, add new options and new characters. Moreover, Girl dot game also tells you about it in its article on big games in Deluxe version.
