“While some hospitality, such as stays in personal homes, may not have been disclosed, Thomas appears to have broken the law by failing to disclose expensive flights, yacht cruises and sports tickets, according to ethics experts,” the report said.
At least four other House Democrats have also called for Thomas to step down, including Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Bill Pascrell (DN.J), Gerry Connoly (D-Va.) and Hank Johnson (D-Ga.).
” Unprecedented. Stunning. Disgusting. The height of hypocrisy to wear a #SCOTUS robe and accept undisclosed gifts from billionaires who benefit from your decisions,” Jayapal posted on X. ” Resign. »

Democrats in the Senate have tried to pass legislation that would reform the Supreme Court’s ethical guidelines in an effort to increase transparency. This bill was passed by a committee, but is unlikely to be passed by a full Senate.
“I said it would get worse; it’s going to keep getting worse,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (DR.I.), who helped spearhead the bill, said about X in response to Thursday’s report.
“ProPublica’s latest revelation of unreported lavish gifts to Judge Clarence Thomas makes it clear: These are not just ethical lapses,” said Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin. written on X. “It’s a shameless lifestyle guaranteed for years by a bunch of flattering billionaires. »
The ProPublica report builds on the outlet’s work which uncovered a range of undeclared gifts Thomas received from wealthy benefactors and generated questions about the court’s ethical guidelines. The publication reported that Thomas agreed to regular luxury vacations, trips on private jets and yachts, and thousands of dollars in tuition for his Texas billionaire relative Harlan Crow.
Responding to reports of accepting a luxury holiday in April, Thomas said he had been advised that personal hospitality from friends without court cases need not be reported.
