The question therefore arises: who was Benoîte Rancurel? The latter was a shepherdess, born in 1647, and was known to have witnessed apparitions of the Virgin Mary as she cared for her animals. Visions that lasted for decades, 54 years in all, when she also saw her guardian angel and several saints.

In homage to his visions, a sanctuary had been erected: Notre-Dame du Laus. In 2008, the Marian apparitions of Benoîte Rencurel were officially recognized by the Church.
