Do the French work less than other Europeans?

Last year, in France, full-time employees worked an average of 1,668 hours. Only Finland shows a shorter duration. But in terms of non-employees (artisans, traders, liberal professions, etc.) France is in the top 5 of the hardest-working countries.

France is regularly singled out as a country where people work much less than elsewhere. In-depth reading of a comparative study published this Wednesday allows us to qualify this criticism. The Rexecode institute has in fact looked at the latest data available to Eurostat, the European statistics institute which itself carries out national surveys on this subject (in France, the annual survey on the employment of ‘Insee).

These are therefore the responses of a representative panel of workers in each country, responses taking into account overtime, vacations, RTT, sick leave and parental leave. For full-time employees, the average in France is 1,668 hours worked, or 124 hours less than the European average (1,792 hours).

In France, employees work 571 hours less than those who bill for their services

Compared to other EU countries, France ranks second among countries where full-time employees work the least, behind Finland (1,640 hours) and ahead of Sweden (1,672 hours), the Bas (1,696 hours) and Belgium (1,700 hours).

However, what is true for full-time employees is not true for self-employed workers (artisans, traders, freelancers, liberal professions). Last year, they worked an average of 2,239 hours, 63 hours more than the European average of 2,176 hours.

French self-employed workers thus appear in the top 5 of those who work the most hours within the EU. And yet, in recent years, they have tended to considerably reduce their working hours. In 2012, the number of hours worked was much greater (2,447 on average), while for employees, the number of hours worked remained stable.
