In a hard-fought match, Eugénie Bouchard lost in three sets of 6-2, 6-7(4) and 6-4 against Veronika Kudermetova, Monday in the second round of the tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The Canadian athlete can blame herself. Her opponent, 19th best player in the WTA rankings, broke her six times, including four times in the first round.

Bouchard won the second set in a tiebreaker, but came back from her problems in the deciding set. Kudermetova had eight aces in the entire match, compared to just two for the Montrealer.
The Quebecer only won 56% of the points on the first serve. Her rival showed much better results at this level, with a success rate of 68%.
This setback is Bouchard’s 15th in a row against a member of the top 20. We have to go back to the round of 16 of the 2017 Madrid tournament to see the 29-year-old achieve such a feat of arms. She then beat Angelique Kerber with a score of 6-3 and 5-0, the latter having withdrawn in the second set.
Sunday evening, Bouchard dominated her match against the public favorite and 181st racket in the world Renata Zarazua. It only took him 1 hour 29 minutes to win 6-1 and 7-6(4). Unlike her most recent opposition against Kudermetova, Bouchard won 74% of her points on her first serve.
Defeats for Fung and Zhao
Stacey Fung and Carol Zhao’s tournaments also ended on Monday. The first named lost 6-3, 2-6 and 6-0 against the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (42nd). Zhao lost in just 1 hour 23 minutes with a score of 6-4, 6-3 to American Sofia Kenin, ranked 53rd.
Fung gave Kostyuk a hard time, especially in the second round. However, she had a terrible final set, winning only 33% of her points on the first serve.
As for Zhao, she only beat her opponent once in the entire game.
