With inflation, some families on vacation pay attention to every expense. Merchants are feeling it with lower footfall and spending. Mountain tourism professionals are hoping for a rebound in August.

In Saint-Lary Soulan (Hautes-Pyrénées), the streets are crowded and tourists are there. However, traders are unanimous: there is indeed a drop in attendance. “We had a significant drop from July 16 or 17. People came less”, specifies Fabien Casteran, owner of “the stable of Ramoun”. According to the city’s tourist office, the mountain resort has only suffered a 3% drop in attendance this year.

Purchasing power at half mast

It is the purchasing power that has finally diminished, with inflation. “I pay more attention. It’s not necessarily conscious, but in fact I cook more. There are fewer differences between the year and the holidays », says a tourist. To reduce the bill, some families decide to share accommodation costs. Restaurant owners are also the first to be affected by the decline in the purchasing power of tourists. “In general, it is rare that we have everything. Large tables no longer exist »says Zoé Courjault, bartender in a bar in the city.
