The mercury will drop sharply this week to reach cold but typical temperatures of November.
Only a few days left to enjoy the mildness of autumn. The mercury is expected to fall this week in the country during the first cold snap of the season.
The cause, according to La Chaîne Météo, is “a mass of polar air” which will “tumble from Scandinavia and plunge into the Mediterranean via France”.
First frosts from Thursday
Temperatures will gradually drop from this Monday, November 20, starting in mountainous areas. From Tuesday morning, we will drop well below the 10°C mark in Belfort (7°C), Gap (6°C) and Bourg-Saint-Maurice (2°C), according to Météo-France.
The cold will assert itself a little more on Wednesday, underlines La Chaîne Météo, with maximums which will not exceed 6°C in Alsace and 10°C on the Atlantic coast. Only the south of France seems spared, with very mild temperatures forecast in Montpellier (15°C), Marseille (16°C) and Nice (18°C).
Thursday morning, the first widespread white frosts will appear, from the “southwest to the eastern borders”. A phenomenon “extremely ordinary for November 23”, underlines meteorologist Guillaume Séchet who specifies that it will be “the first morning with frosts of this magnitude since the start of the cold season”.
Very cold Saturday morning
A further drop in temperatures will occur Friday evening. Saturday morning, Météo-France forecasts 5°C in Rennes, 4°C in Paris, 3°C in Strasbourg, 6°C in Lyon and even 8°C in Ajaccio.
The forecast cold corresponds to seasonal norms, recalls meteorologist Guillaume Séchet on
“For a real winter cold wave to occur in France, the polar descent must be massive and/or the influence must be more continental (northeast or east),” explains the specialist.
Snow and disruptions
In terms of precipitation, a slight improvement is expected in the middle of the week thanks to the strengthening of the Atlantic anticyclone. But after a month of record rain, the lull will be short-lived. New disruptions are expected from Friday across a large part of the country, from Brittany to Alsace.
Finally, while the first ski resorts open their doors, snow should fall this week “on all the mountain ranges” of the country, according to La Chaîne Météo. A few snowflakes are even expected in the plains, in the east of the country, at the end of the week.
