The French government intends to end the sale of disposable vapes (Electronic cigarettes) as part of a national anti-smoking campaign to be announced in the coming weeks.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said on French radio RTL on Sunday that she would continue the work of former health minister François Braun by banning these devices, commonly known as “blown vapes”.

Multi-use vapes will remain on sale.

Borne explained that the disposable devices are particularly aimed at teenagers, offering colorful packaging and fruity flavors, such as watermelon.

Borne said disposable vapes “give young people bad habits.”

“Disposable vapes are becoming a reflex that young people are getting used to. That’s how they start smoking, and it has to be stopped,” the Prime Minister said on RTL.

The prime minister did not give a specific timetable for the ban, but former health minister Braun had previously said the aim would be to enact legislation phasing out the devices by the end of 2023.

Several other European countries have already taken steps to ban these devices, such as Germany, Belgium and Ireland.

Disposable vapes, nicknamed “puffs”, are cheaper than cigarettes, with prices ranging from €8 to €12 for a “500 puff device”.

Electronic cigarettes can contain up to 20 mg of nicotine.

According to the French organization Alliance against tobacco, even if the law does not allow minors to buy electronic cigarettes, 13% of 13-16 year olds have already tried “puffs”.

In addition to the decrease in nicotine addiction among young people, the French Prime Minister spoke of the environmental consequences of disposable vapes, made of plastic and containing a non-recyclable lithium battery.

The Prime Minister also told RTL that the elimination of disposable vapes will be part of a wider plan to reduce tobacco consumption in France, extending from 2023 to 2028, and which will be made public in the coming weeks. .

Regarding the measures planned under the campaign, Borne said that the price of cigarettes will not increase in the near future. The price of a pack of cigarettes is expected to remain stable in 2024, despite previous indications that it may have increased. “We increased tobacco taxes this year and we don’t plan to increase them next year,” Borne told RTL.

According to the French government, tobacco is responsible for 75,000 deaths a year and constitutes a “major public health problem”, according to Borne.
