Nov 20 (Reuters) – Daniel Kan, co-founder and chief product officer of General Motors (GM.N) Cruise, has resigned, the company told Reuters on Monday, a day after Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt left.
A spokesperson for Cruise said Kan announced his resignation in a Slack message. The company and Kan provided no further details.
In his message to employees, seen by Reuters, Kan noted that Cruise was making 10,000 trips per week. “I know Cruise will get there soon,” he wrote.
The new release comes at a tumultuous time for autonomous taxi maker Cruise, which is undergoing a security review of its U.S. fleet, leading Vogt to resign on Sunday.
Vogt, 38, offered little explanation, saying simply “I have resigned from my position” in an email to staff seen by Reuters on Sunday.
Cruise’s woes also constitute a setback for an industry that depends on public trust and cooperation from regulators. The unit had touted ambitious plans in recent months to expand to more cities, offering fully autonomous taxi rides.
Vogt’s resignation came after GM and Cruise’s board increased their scrutiny of his management.
Cruise is stepping down after an accident in October that ended with one of its self-driving taxis dragging a pedestrian. Cruise has withdrawn all of its vehicles from testing in the United States to conduct a safety review.
Kan did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
Vogt apologized to staff over the weekend for the company’s ongoing problems. “I take responsibility for the situation Cruise finds himself in today,” he wrote in an email. “There is no excuse, and what happened is not sugar-coated. »
GM has reshuffled Cruise’s management, including naming general counsel Craig Glidden as chief administrative officer, bringing in a third-party safety executive and appointing co-presidents.
Regulation of autonomous vehicles is still nascent and largely overseen on a state-by-state basis. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told reporters Monday that the federal government will do everything it can using existing regulatory authorities to ensure Cruise and other autonomous vehicles are deployed safely.
