PARIS 2024 – As if Ile-de-France residents were not already annoyed enough by certain changes linked to the 2024 Olympics. After the announcement of the doubling of the price of the metro ticket, traffic restrictions will be put in place around certain areas during the Games , announced police prefect Laurent Nuñez in an interview with Parisian Tuesday November 28.

An exemption will be necessary to travel by car in these areas. HuffPost takes stock of what we know about this security system.

• What are the areas where traffic will be regulated?

The prefect mentions four security perimeters. Firstly there is “an organizing perimeter where only accredited people (athletes, staff, organization, journalists, service providers, etc.) or those with a ticket enter”, he specifies. It is located “in the immediate vicinity” of each Olympic venue.

Then, there is the protection perimeter or Silt (from the Internal Security and Fight against Terrorism Law). “ To participate, everyone is searched. This perimeter does not generally include local residents, except for the opening ceremony and on a limited basis for a few sites. »he explains.

Then come the two circulation perimeters, blue and red. In these two areas, “we do not target pedestrians or cyclists who may enter”, would like to reassure the prefect. Rather, they concern “motorized vehicles with two or four wheels”.

In the red perimeter, which is located ” closer ” of each site, “the principle is the ban on traffic, unless exempted, due to the significant pedestrian flow and the risk of vehicular attacks or disturbances”explains the police chief to Parisian.

In the blue perimeter, wider than the red, “we want to let only those who live there, work there or want to go to a business or restaurant into the car”explains the police chief. “The idea here is to avoid transit traffic”he adds.

A map of these areas should be posted online soon. To wait for, The Parisian made one, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the Grand Paris association:

As for the metro, stations in the Silt perimeters will be closed, while those located in the red and blue perimeters “will remain open”. Be careful though: “some stations close to the sites will close for capacity reasons because they are too small”warns Laurent Nuñez.

• When will traffic be regulated?

Restrictions for cars will be activated “during competition time, 2.5 hours before the start of the events and up to one hour afterwards”.

“It’s going to be more complicated” July 26, the day of the opening ceremony, warns the Paris police chief. There, the Ooze will be activated “several days before”and the red perimeter “will be very important, more than in previous days”. Activation of the latter “will be done a few hours before the start of the ceremony and will end once it is over”.

• Who can request an exemption in the red zone?

A “list of categories of people authorized to enter” in the red zone is currently the subject of a consultation, indicates Laurent Nuñez. This exemption “concerns for example local residents who have parking, those who visit vulnerable people, emergency and rescue vehicles, recovery vehicles he explains. Taxis and VTCs must be authorized if they are dropping someone off and only if they have proof. Because for us, it is a very important safety zone. There will be a lot of pedestrians. There is no question that there are cars that don’t belong there. »

Likewise, merchants needing to make deliveries within the perimeter will have to provide a document so that their vehicle can pass.

• How to obtain an exemption?

It will be necessary “register in advance on a digital platform”which should be put online no earlier than March 2024, “by providing a certain number of supporting documents, address but not only”announcementLaurent Nuñez to Parisian. Registration will allow you to obtain “a QR code to present during checks”.

Of the “access, entry and exit points” Red zones will be defined. If you wish to go to a restaurant located in a red zone, you will need to register in advance on the platform and go to an access point with your proof.

“For the most vulnerable people, those who do not have access to the Internet in particular, the city of Paris has provided the possibility of obtaining a badge or proof”adds Laurent Nuñez.

For blue zones, no need for pre-registration. But “There will still be checks. People who enter this zone must be able to justify the reason for their trip. ».
