Jérôme Cahuzac “does not forbid himself” from returning to politics and believes “to have paid his debt”

The former minister convicted in 2018 for tax fraud declared this Monday on France Inter that he was “holding nothing back” regarding a possible return to politics, via an elected mandate.

“It’s clear that I’m not denying myself anything. » It was with these words, on France Inter, that the former minister convicted of tax fraud Jérôme Cahuzac responded this Monday, November 27 to a question about possible participation in the next elections planned in France.

“Doing politics is the conquest of power and it is public action. Public action can only be exercised with legitimacy, that is to say with a mandate,” he stressed.

Sentenced to five years of ineligibility

Jérôme Cahuzac denied “eye to eye” in front of deputies that he had a hidden account abroad after revelations from Mediapart in 2013. Five years later, he was sentenced in 2018 for tax fraud to four years in prison, including two suspended sentences, and five years of ineligibility. “I paid for this lie with social banishment” before the National Assembly and “I paid for the illegalities of the prison and the fine,” he noted on Monday.

“I take responsibility for what I did, I paid my debt,” he declared on France Inter. “Does this prohibit me from speaking publicly about what I see? he added.

On Thursday, the ex-MP held a public meeting in Monsempron-Libos, in Lot-et-Garonne, where he denounced a “ravaged left” and a “republican right” which was “disintegrating”.

“Politically, I’m not sure what happened last year when creating what was just an electoral cartel intended to save a few seats (Nupes, Editor’s note)”, is “no more serious” than his tax fraud, he said on Monday. The Nupes puts the left in “absolute incapacity to regain power”, according to the ex-minister. “On the criminal level, of course, what I did is more serious, the proof, I was convicted, they are not,” he declared.
