Jill Biden has tested positive for Covid-19, the White House has announced.
The US president’s wife is resting at her home in Delaware with “mild symptoms”, her spokeswoman said, while Joe Biden has tested negative for the virus.
The announcement comes after the couple traveled to Florida on Saturday to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia.
Ms Biden, 72, last tested positive for the virus in August last year, after Mr Biden himself recovered from the same illness.
At the time, both initially recovered before receiving “rebound” positive test results a few days later.
They are considered to be in a high-risk group due to their age, but both have been vaccinated.
Elizabeth Alexander, Ms Biden’s communications director, said: “Tonight the First Lady tested positive for Covid-19. She is currently showing only mild symptoms. She will stay at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary, said: “Following the First Lady’s positive test for Covid-19, President Biden was administered a Covid test this evening. The president tested negative. The president will run tests at a regular cadence this week and monitor for symptoms.
Virus cases have been rising in the United States in recent weeks, with hospitalizations rising 19 percent to 15,067 nationwide as of August 19.
Deaths rose 18 percent in the week ending August 16, according to the most recent update posted on the Centers for Disease Control and Protection website.
