Mr Sunak was drawn into the dispute after a former senior education official told the BBC he halved funding to rebuild more schools while he was chancellor.

Jonathan Slater, former permanent secretary to the Department for Education, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: ‘I was absolutely amazed to see that the government’s decision was to halve the rebuilding program schools, increasing from 100 to 50 per year. .”

But Mr Sunak insisted that 50 schools a year was in line with what had happened over the previous decade, saying the attack on his record was “completely misguided”.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies said capital spending on schools had fallen 50 per cent since 2010, but funding for maintenance and repairs had increased while Mr Sunak was chancellor.

Ms Keegan’s controversial comments appeared in footage released by ITV News, filmed as the camera was repositioned for additional shots.

She said: “Has anyone ever said, you know what, you did a good job because everyone just sat on their and did nothing? No sign of that, right?

In a follow-up interview, she apologized for her “chosen language” and said it was an “off-the-cuff remark”. Downing Street later said Mr Sunak was happy with the apology and still had faith in her.

The Telegraph can reveal that at least nine of the schools affected by the RAAC were previously on hold for improvements before funding was cut. The schools were to be rebuilt or repaired under the Blair government’s Building Schools for the Future scheme, which was scrapped by Michael Gove when he became education secretary in 2010.
