Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber has obtained planning permission to build an elegant pool house at his historic 5,000 acre country home in Hampshire.
Basingstoke Council will allow the musical theater impresario to demolish an existing wooden pavilion located next to its outdoor swimming pool and tennis court and replace it with a more elegant building which will contain a kitchen, dining room, lounge and changing rooms.
The new building will feature a “sedum” roof, measuring 60 feet by 15 feet, which is planted with grass seeds and other vegetation. It will also have a pressed metal fascia.
The pool house will be built on the grounds of Sydmonton Court, Hampshire – Lord Webber’s Grad II listed home which is surrounded by Watership Down, one of Britain’s most famous areas of outstanding natural beauty.
Lord Webber, 75, who is worth around £820million, bought Sydmonton Court in 1978 and lives there with his wife, former equestrian sportswoman Madeleine Gurdon, whom he married in 1991.

Documents submitted to Basingstoke Council state: ‘The pavilion, like the existing building, would continue to be used for purposes incidental to the occupation of Sydmonton Court.
“The proposed replacement building is strongly contained within the grounds of the estate and does not introduce any new use or activity to the site.
“Due to its modest location, low-key design and discreet location, the proposed replacement building is proposed that the development has responded appropriately and sensitively to its context and would not cause detriment to the setting of the properties. neighboring heritage sites or the character of the local landscape or the landscape quality of the AONB (area of natural beauty).’
There were no objections from neighbors, the parish council, or the county archaeologist. In a report, the council’s historic environment team also gave the green light to the project.
Referring to the existing pavilion, which has a theatrical tent-like roof, he said: “The structure is wooden, lightly constructed and has not stood the test of time.
“Although the building is maintained it is in poor condition and although it is a shame to lose the structure which is of interest and arguably reflects ownership, thus contributing to the (future) significance of the assets, the withdrawal is not disputed.
Lord Webber has submitted the plans to Basingstoke Council, a decision on the planning application is expected by the end of July

“The design is decidedly contemporary, a style that will be of ‘its time’ in due course. The design allows for a number of durable construction features and greater continuous performance.
The new pavilion will also feature triple-glazed windows and underfloor heating for year-round use.
Lord Webber’s house stands in grounds overlooking a Grade II listed church, while large parts of the estate are made up of paddocks, fish ponds and a polo ground.
It also includes a granary, dovecote, stable, barns, carthouse and gardens registered with the Hampshire Garden Trust.
The historic house was previously owned by the Kingsmill family, given to them by Henry VIII upon the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s. They owned it for 400 years before it was finally purchased by Lord Webber.
Surrounded by Watership Down, the countryside is popular with tourists who come to see the site of Richard Adam’s epic novel which takes its name from the area.
Lord Webber divides his time between Hampshire and a central London home.
The musical theater impresario bought Sydmonton Court, a 5,000-acre Grade II listed building, in 1978
Planning documents also show that Lord Webber successfully requested a series of building works in the past, which involved the construction of a new conservatory, the restoration of stables and the removal of a dam on his estate.
Lord Webber has already held an exclusive arts festival at Sydmonton Court where shows such as Evita, Cats, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera and The Beautiful Game had their first public audience in front of specially invited guests from the world of theatre, television and film.
He once revealed in an interview that the Queen even visited him at his country house, but his children were very “naughty”.
Lord Webber revealed: “She once came to our house. Do you know what the children did? It was so mean of them. They were old enough to know more, but they put football shirts in front of the windows as she walked past and the Queen said, “Do you normally put your laundry outside the window? » «
