Emergency services were called to intervene around 10:45 a.m. on the westbound highway, near the municipality of Saint-Zotique.

According to the first information released by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the driver of a truck struck at least one sport utility vehicle (SUV).

At this time, all occupants of the SUV, two adults and three children, are in critical condition.

The truck driver “would not have been able to stop in time in the face of slowing traffic,” provincial police said.

The SQ was unable to provide the Register more details on the victims in the early afternoon. These were taken to hospital.

It was also unclear if criminal elements were being considered at the time.

“Collision scene re-enactors accompanied by an investigator will go to the scene to clarify the causes and circumstances surrounding this event. To this end, Highway 20 West is entirely from KM 6,” wrote the SQ in a press release.

Remember that the 75 days between Quebec’s national holiday and Labor Day are considered the deadliest on the roads by CAA-Quebec.

According to the annual report of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec, 116 people lost their lives in 2022 in accidents that occurred between June 24 and September 1, which represents one third of the deaths recorded throughout the year.

More details to come…
